Charges have been levied against the man who tethered his dog to a flatbed trailer after the disturbing photo went viral. The photo showed a large, long-haired dog cowering on the trailer’s open base. The dog had been tied to the front rail of the trailer.

According to the Calgary Humane Society press release, on October 28, 2017, the photo of the dog tethered to the flatbed trailer being hauled through Calgary was shared on social media more than 15,000 times and garnered 1,400 comments from angry viewers and readers. An investigation soon was initiated by the Calgary Police Service, the Calgary Humane Society and Rocky View County.

On November 11, 2017, the dog’s owner, Volodymyr Irodenko of Rocky View, surrendered to authorities and was charged under municipal, provincial and federal legislation for offenses ranging from causing an animal to be in distress, to transporting an animal outside the cab of a vehicle. The criminal charge, which includes causing damage or injury to animals while they are being driven or conveyed, is an indictable offense carrying a maximum punishment of two years in prison if found guilty.

“Brad Nichols, Senior Manager, Animal Cruelty Investigations said, “Transporting dogs in the beds of trucks can be incredibly dangerous to the dog, between exposure to extreme weather and the risk of falling. This offense is aggravated by the manner in which this dog was being transported, on a flatbed with no side rails to keep him on the trailer. We are very lucky, in Calgary, to have agencies that can work together so effectively to ensure the well being of animals and accountability for reckless owners.”

The dog, believed to be a Leonberger has been removed from his owner and is currently in the custody of the Calgary Humane Society. The dog is said to be doing fine.

  1. He needs a heavy hit !! He should be made to ride on the trailer the way he made the dog ride. This is disgusting. DO NOT give the dog back to him. If he has no more concern about him to begin with, why would he care about him now???

  2. Give him the maximum sentence! He has no sense for another living thing! It’s about time the courts make examples out of these people and hopefully it will deter other people but given the mentality of the human race I don’t think so. Whatever happened to our common sense and compassion?

  3. Only a moron would tie his dog to a open flatbed trailer. Happy the dog was taken away from this idiot and hope he gets at least 2 years for endangering the welfare of this beautiful dog, and for being so darn stupid!

  4. Another brain dead idiot – so glad this dog was taken from him – he does not deserve to have any animal. I hope he is convicted and sentenced to the full two years in jail.
