Service dog forced out by breed ban

Thanks to a breed ban in the city of Yakima, Washington, a woman’s service dog was impounded. According to KATU News, Danika Denton’s mixed breed dog, Romeo, was impounded by the city because he appears to be a pit bull.

Thanks to Dento’s family, who lives nearby in the small town of Selah, Romeo was able to be released, but he is no longer living with his owner because he is banned in Yakima. Denton, who believes that her dog is a Labrador retriever mix, has secured the help of Seattle attorney, Adam Karp, to fight Romeo’s removal from her home.

Karp stated, “Romeo has an innate ability to really aid Danika and that makes him an emotional support animal, but he is also a service dog because of the individualized training,”

The Yakima city breed ban has been in effect since 1987 – the banned breeds include: American pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American bulldogs and American Staffordshire terriers

  1. Good that she has an attorney but also maybe get a DNA test to actually show what breed or combination of breeds the dog is. Hope this gets worked out soon for Danika’s sake.

  2. Bans against all Bully breeds in All states and countries need to be banned altogether since 1987 really ppl get with the program and the times let all breeds stay with their owners

  3. This is wrong on so many levels…_i am so tired of Pit Bulls and all breeds of that family being penalized…..up to the 80’s these dogs were the #1 family dogs…..families bought them or hot them to assist in caring for their children…..but because evil people have tried to turn these wonderful dogs into figHting machines, due to no fault of there own……now family dogs like this service dog are being taken away from their owners…why let evil people determine the fate of these beautiful animals…..I pray her lawyer has him returned to her….and then goes to work to stop the ban on the breed in that area and everywhere.

  4. No dog should be banned unless they present a danger to other humans or pets. This is a trained service dog and until the dog shows it’s self to present some sort of danger (and I highly doubt it ever will), I don’t care what breed it is, BSL should NOT exist!

  5. I think its time we banned all the people that instituted these BSL laws and put them in kill shelters! Maybe then they might have compassion! I really don’t see any difference between this and genocide or ethnic cleansing!

  6. Breed discrimination should be illegal….it’s outrageous, illogical, and canine racism! It should also be against the law to seize and impound a service dog whatever breed it may be! This story has me shaking in anger!

  7. Yakima WA needs a massive wake up call – this BSL law is such garbage and innocent dogs are punished for the way they look – no matter what breed they are – this is the stupidest most biased and discriminatory BS. First of all the WRONG species is being criminalized – it is the fucking scumbag HUMANS who abuse, torture and force them to fight that are the criminals, not the dogs whose only recourse is aggression. THEN authorities decide to blame the dogs for the cruelty they have endured. A perfect example is this instance – an innocent dog being taken because of HOW HE LOOKS –

  8. So, why was the dog just now taken away if the breed ban has been in effect? My guess is that someone (a neighbor perhaps?) doesn’t like Romeo. Breed bans are ridiculous. Let’s have our lawmakers work on something IMPORTANT.

  9. Under ADA law, a service dog may not be impounded from its owner even if the dog is in a “banned” category of dog breed. If a person has a service dog for example who is a pit bull, or other banned breed, the dog may not be taken from its owner because a service dog and owner relationship is protected under the law- a service dog is considered the same as medical equipment so if a neighborhood or housing complex has a breed ban on certain dogs , that DOES NOT apply to a service dog.
