Update: According to TMZ, the American Humane Association representative who was present during the filming of “A Dog’s Purpose” has been suspended following the release of the disturbing video footage showing the terrified dog being forced into the churning water. An independent third party is being brought in to investigate the situation.

On Wednesday, TMZ released disturbing behind the scenes video from the upcoming movie, “A Dog’s Purpose.” The video shows a trainer trying to force a frightened German shepherd into churning water. Voices can be heard stating that the water is warm and coaxing the trainer to just “throw him in,” despite the dog’s obvious fear.

The dog is first partially put into the water – presumably to let him know that it is not cold. While it is disturbing to witness the dog’s terror over being forced to do something that he clearly doesn’t want to do, it is the final moments of the behind-the-scenes video that are heart stopping.

A person in the water is near the edge of the pool where the dog is thrown in – the dog’s head remains above water momentarily and then disappears beneath the tumultuous surface. As soon as the dog goes under, someone repeatedly screams “cut it,” and the fate of the dog, based on the footage, is unknown.

According to TMZ, director Lasse Hallström was present during this portion of the filming.  Amblin Partners and Universal Pictures told TMZ that they would be investigating the circumstances surrounding this particular situation.

  1. The dog was scared, something wrong, they are not stupid (dogs)!!!!!! People are stupid, and will do anything for money!!!! Shame on you!!!! Hope that poor baby is ok!!

  2. What do you expect from people with no souls or compassion for life in general always a fight between good and evil
Have a heart ❤️? No is the answer, well than your not a human being

  3. This footage made me cry, that poor dog, I pray he was alright! I was so looking forward to this movie and right now I’m sorry I even bought the book. Please tell me that frightened dog is alright!!!!!!!

    • Don’t dispare over buying the book (it was excellent), as the author had no part in this horrific filming abuse…
I’d like to find the bastard heard repeatedly in the video stating the poor dog should simply be thrown
In! Obviously, an undertow was present at the tank’s end, where the waves piled up (like a waterfall)… I pray he survived?

Quelle HONTE.

  5. HOW CAN ANYONE WITH MORALS FIND THIS ACCEPTABLE? THE TRAINER AND ALL INVOLVED NEED TO BE FINED!! I WILL NOT BE GOING TO THIS MOVIE TO MAKE $$$ FOR THIS STUDIO ETC!!!¡

  6. No question, I’ll pass! The ASPCA Representative supposedly looking after the welfare of this animal was suspended, probably for doing nothing to help this animal! Is this a common practice in the movie industry, to look the other way in regards to the health and safety of these animals?? I wonder?? If not for this leaked video, no one would have had a clue!! I won’t be seeing this movie!

  7. Oh please. I have made my dogs, lovingly, go into a bathtub NUMEROUS times, when they didnt want to, because they NEEDED a bath. They got over it. We LOVE our dogs dearly. BUT, WE are the humans, and are in charge, and they are the pets. As such, we are charged with making responsible decisions regarding their well- being. I’m sure thisbdog was NOT Abused. Geez. We are going to see this movie Jan 27.

    • This is not a bathtub! It’s churning water which was obviously deeper than a tub. Otherwise the dog would not have gone underneath!

      • Can’t be that bad there is a person walking around in it! Getting the dogs feet wet to teach him it’s warm, really? Dogs have no problem with cold water. And just like clips of movies they pick what they want you to see, just like the animal advocates did here. Why didn’t they show the rest, because the dog is fine! They want you to think the worst!

      • Monica they weren’t being “lovingly” to this dog. The scene was a pool where they used 8 motor boards to imitate a river. Big difference between this and your bathtub wouldn’t you agree?

    • There is a big difference between a bathtub and riled up water that they were forcing this dog into. I’m sure there are dogs that could handle this but the one they were forcing into the turbulence obviously couldn’t. Did you even watch the video the dog was obviously in trouble when they cut the filming. I only hope the dog is ok.

  8. I just saw a commercial for this yesterday. Needless to say I will not be spending my money on this movie, and just tweeted this article out to my 3000+ followers urging them to stay home too.

  9. The people responsible for this movie should be charged with animal abuse and jailed!!! Unacceptable!! Either that – or do to them EXACTLY as they did to the poor dog

  10. Omg! My favorite book, and now I can’t go see the movie! This is wrong, so wrong. I’ve been reading lately how many times this kind of this has happened. It’s overlooked. Maybe this bad publicity will put a stop to it…

  11. I have a German Shepherd. Animals should not bet forced to do tasks. Hercules is clearly stressed and forced to do something to benefit the entertainment industry. I will not be seeing this movie with my family.

  12. Completely unacceptable and unprofessional on the handlers part. They chose the wrong dog for the task to begin with. Even most water loving dogs would need practice with a stunt like this.
They got caught. Now open a full investigation into this supplier’s operation.

  13. I wanted to see this film but after this article I won’t! I only hope more people will find out about it and there will be some consequences for the producer.

  14. Finally TMZ reporting something that helps humanity! Harvey Levin is an animal advocate and that’s why I overlook some of the stuff they report on on TMZ. Thank you TMZ for reporting this and caring about animals. This dog should be taken away from whoever “owns” him. KEEP ON THIS KIND OF STUFF TMZ!! Let Hollywood answer to abuse of animals…they’ve been doing it for decades and this needs to stop!

  15. Where is the video? I hear all these comments persecuting the trainer but don’t see any proof of the allegations! Sorry but I don’t have much confidence in the media! They have the tendency to publish miss information just to get headline news at the cost of destroying innocent people’s lives! I’m not saying that it’s right to mistreat animals but when the headlines reads watch our video of this tragic event and they don’t show the video I have to question the authenticity of the report. My dog doesn’t like standing water and will avoid it at all cost. He won’t even put a paw in an one inch deep mud puddle and panicked when I tried to bath him in a tub. Maybe the trainer didn’t know the dog would panic until after it happened. You can’t change the past only the future. Soften up until the facts are established and if this does turn out to be an abuse issue instead of a one time incident then persecute the trainer. I didn’t have any idea my dog would panic until it happened. I had put my dog in the tub many times and used the spray wand without any problem but the once I tried to put him in tub of water all hell broke out. Who knew?

    • You make an excellent point about dogs panicking over things they never had before and I question the timing of the release of this “video”. They have had this since November and it is only now coming to light? Why wait until the week before the release of the movie?

  16. With Universal, Steven Spielberg/DreamWorks at the helm, why wasn’t robotics or other fancy “smoke and mirrors” used. The Oxymoron is “A Dogs Purpose”, as the movie portrays the love between K-9 and human… TMZ video shows abuse for $$$$, reflecting how sad our species really is!

  17. American Humane performed an investigation where they documented that this scene was mounted by someone and is not an actual scene from the movie. “Boycott this movie”…..seriously… all the dogs are fine.
