In Holliston, Massachusetts, despite heroic rescue efforts by the fire department and volunteers, a beagle did not survive on Friday after falling through the ice at Linden Pond. According to the Holliston Fire Department, a report came in about the dog struggling to get out of the icy water. When rescuers arrived, the dog had fallen below the surface.Holliston Fire Department 2

Personnel from Ladder 1 and Engine 1 deployed the Rescue Alive! sled to attempt a recovery. The men, dressed in cold water suits were quickly able to located the dog named Toby, using the sled to bring him back to shore. According to the WickedHollistonLocal news, a firefighter was able to resuscitate the dog and rushed him to the animal hospital just minutes away where two veterinarians tried to keep the dog alive. Tragically Toby died.

There is no way to tell how safe a frozen river or a pond is by looking at it. Even if one part is strong enough for people or their dogs to walk, there is absolutely no guarantee the next step won’t be the fatal one. Anyone who falls through the ice – our pets included, quickly face a life or death situation. The cold is capable of stopping one’s heart – just from the shock. At the very least, the icy fall can quickly render someone breathless and therefore helpless. Our dogs depend on their humans to be safe. Of course, it is human nature to want to allow our dogs to run free – they love it, but remember you could be signing your dog’s death sentence as well as your own. Be a good dog parent, and keep your dog leashed at all times when out for a walk this winter.

Rest in peace Toby.

  1. How many of these senseless, NEEDLESS deaths must occur EACH WINTER, before people WAKE UP AND PROTECT their precious companions? LEASH, folks – and let ’em run loose ONLY in a safe, contained or controlled area!
Otherwise, you’d better DAMN WELL JUMP IN AND SAVE THEM FROM YOUR THOUGHTLESS CARELESSNESS!
Rest-in-peace, precious soul: what a horribly agonizing way to die…

  2. My first question where was Tobys human and why didn’t they make sure this wouldn’t happen! This little man didn’t deserve to die that way! They were able to resuscitate Toby but there was no way he was going to survive! His brain was already destroyed from lack of oxygen and the frigid temperatures of the water and the air! Rest easy Toby! You get to run and play with your new friends! The sun warms you there is lots of cool clear water to drink and lots of food to eat! Good nite angel!
