Authorities in Memorial Village, Texas, have arrested the home health care worker who was recorded on a webcam repeatedly striking a 94-year-old woman she was responsible for caring for in the senior’s home.  The aide, Brenda Floyd, 59, was arrested on Friday morning.Healthcare worker attacks

According to a social media post from CrimeStoppers of Houston,  Floyd is currently in jail. The organization updated concerned citizens earlier in the morning on their Facebook page:

“Crime Stoppers of Houston worked with Memorial Villages Police Department and Chief JD Sanders on this case. This woman has been #captured and is now behind bars.  Thank you to all involved!”

The health care worker had been caring for her elderly patient, Dorothy Bratten, who suffers from Alzheimer’s and is barely able to speak. A video surveillance camera, installed the previous evening by Bratten’s family after they became concerned about bruises on the elderly woman’s body, told the tragic and disturbing story. On January 1, Floyd was supposed to be helping Mrs. Bratten when the aide spotted the old woman feeding her cute brown dog scraps of food. Floyd became infuriated as the gaunt, old lady fed her little dog remnants from her own food; striking the fragile woman at least five times in the head, berating her and then striking her again.

AbcNews reports multiple tips had flooded into the Memorial Village Police Department about Floyd’s location, however it is not clear who turned her in and under what circumstances she was arrested. This is a developing story – more details to come as we receive updates.

    • I agree. I also hope she gets the same treatment when and if she grows old. If she has a family, let them throw her away to the worse care home. This is dispecable behaviour. The elderly lady is someone’s mother, grandmother.

      • I hope so Leslie Hayman. Not much info is mentioned about this abuser and how long she will be in jail for. I doubt she will be in for long, probably considered a light crime. Under any circumstances should she return to care work. Hopefully she will be vetted.

  1. Best news ever, that monster need to be in jail and hoping they bit her up in jail by other inmates, she is a crazy ,sick monster .

  2. I hope karma comes back to haunt her!! She is a disgrace to the human race!!
And very lucky that wasn’t my relative she beat on!!

  3. Most of my family is in this field, if I ever heard of one of them being mean to anyone they are caring for I’d disown them after I beet their ass. If you don’t have tender loving compaction stay out of this line of work.

  4. I’m an independent healthcare worker in Wisconsin. I’ve been working in people’s homes or a lot of years. This story disgust me and makes me so angry. I’m not the type of person to beat on anyone but I would really like to beat on that horrible woman. It just infuriates me someone pretending and coming into someone’s home to care for them and they abuse them. I hope she gets the the works. I hope he goes away for years.

  5. I’m a direct care worker, we share the same type of job. I care for a legally blind 90 yo woman. 7 days a week I take care of her. I call her mom, her family treats me like family. I love her, I could never hurt her.
This woman makes me sick, that video is infuriating. Oh I hope they put her in jail and they throw away the key.

  6. This is very disturbing. I am a Social Worker, and have worked with many clients similar to this lady. The problem many times is that the family must rely on Caregivers, who are poorly paid, often work long hours, and are literally everything to the client. They must ofttimes clean up human feces, wash patients, are bitten, scratched and verbally abused by their elderly charges who are mentally incapacitated by their dementia. They can become over whelmed, and there is little support many times for them. The other side of the coin is that this is a job that few want to do, and those doing it often aren’t given the training on how to deal with difficult patients who have severe dementia. It’s not unusual for a paid caregiver (home health aide) to work 12 hour days 6 days a week and for the lowest wage imaginable. What I see here is someone who’s burnt out, over the top with coping with someone she expects to be able to understand her, and who probably had virtually no support by the family and maybe the agency. It sounds as though the dog had a hospitalization that was expensive because he was fed human food, and the woman fed the dog food he should not have had, and this set the caregiver off in the most brutal way possible. If you have a hard time watching this-and I did, what can often make the difference so these incidents don’t occur is better training, better pay, and for home health aides/caregivers to be viewed as the hard working and often over-extended professionals they are. For everyonne that snaps like this, there are twenty who go in and care for those who can’t care for themselves with compassion and kindness.

    • I dont care how overworked you are!! Or underpaid!! Still not an exuse!!! I’m in the health care field. Some people think its a crime when animals are abused. Me, too. This is a Human Being!! Made in God’s image!!! NO EXCUSE!!!!!!

    • Bullshit! I worked with a VNA. You have to take several weeks through a program to get certified. Wow I can see being burnt out, but, to abuse a person and using them as a punching bag is unacceptable. You suck as a social worker. Did it ever occur to you that if you or a family member were the victim of such abuse?

    • Wow you need to know that no agency is going give anyone to work 12 hours a day that means overtime. If so no excuse for such behavior. The victim fed the dog SCRAPS of food. You tell me the danger she did for feeding the dog SCRAPS of food. This woman could not have feed the dog to cause $4000 of vet bills….maybe the caregiver did! You call yourself a social worker and not condemning the behavior of the caregiver? Shame on you!!!!!

    • Excuse me,but, does this elderly woman look as though she could feed her dog without the help of the caregiver? You tell me who feed the dog that caused it to see the vet….another form of patient abuse!!!! Wow take off your rose colored glasses!!!!!

      • Very true,, couldnt have said it better myself… thats right , everything looks different with those rose colored glasses on… take um off, get to see and, know the real world of today… right ?

    • I don’t know where you got your information the dog had been hospitalized and couldn’t eat people food, and even if it was so, I doubt this “care giver” even cared! We looked into getting in home care for my Mother-in-law and they earned more than I did as a grocery store cashier and no way could we afford such care. My Mother-in-law is probably one of the biggest bitches that has ever walked the face of the earth and the wonderful care givers in her assisted living center have been brought to tears by this woman but they don’t seem to have to resort to striking and batting her around. I personally don’t know how they put up with her crap but they do. You are right some of us can’t deal with caring for our elderly relatives, I would have been hard put to do so for my own Mother and I loved her dearly. Someone who wants to work in this profession best be sure they are able to handle what they are signing up for. If not then bow our before you get so “stressed” you have to take it out on a 94 year old feeble woman with Alzheimers! I’m sorry there is no excuse for this woman’s behavior!

    • I too work for home care services IHSS and, one has to go to orientations to deal with different kinds of clients. And, honestly speaking there are NO excuses for this type of behavior reguardless of the situation… this is a 94yr.elderly woman, very, very fragile#1. And, theres noway this elder abuser has been over worked due to this elders needs. With me, IHSS gives me so many hours for 2 weeks period for 2 wks period…. there are no overtime hours. And, poorly paid? Well, we all would like to make alittle more money but, when first starting one is intitled to atleast min.wage $10.00 an hour. Well, what ever the reason , the excuse, this is UNEXCEPTABLE…..There was alot of other ways to address this situation…. heres just one simple example. Just put the lil dog in another room while the elder eats her meals then clean up after the elder then let the lil dog back out so, they can be together again. And, this abuser , why would you hit a 94 yr old in the head, in the first place.? What, you want to kill her ? This abuser should never be able to work taking care of any elders , children or animals period… if this or any care taker would ever treat one of mine like this. I would hunt them down and, lets just say nobody will ever have to worry about her hurting another… NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS CAN MAKE THIS RIGHT….. PERIOD. IM SO HAPPY THEY CAUGHT HER….. thank you jesus….

    • Deb, its kinda hard to believe your a social worker with your words sounds to be finding a way or excuse to defend this abuser. There IS NO way to right this wrong…. you, seem to be one of those social workers that keep letting the abused child go back home to his abused parent untill one day the abuser finally kills the child. This happens all the time. If ANYONE is in the hands of an abuser , get then out of there period before something worse happens….. dont over look any abusive situations and, excuse it with awww, they had a terrible headache that day… COME ON……

    • First we don’t know if the elderly woman fed the dog just because the plate was on the floor doesn’t prove it. Secondly if she doesn’t want this elderly woman feeding the dog then watch her while she is eating. Besides she probably needs help being fed. Third if you don’t want anyone feeding your dam dog then leave it home don’t bring it with you to work. Fourth I have had several small dogs and I have one now you can feed them table food I do it all the time. There is absolutely no excuse to hit a elderly person let lone use foul language towards her. I don’t care if your getting minimum wage or $ 25.00 per hour you do not put your hands on another person there is absolutely no excuse for hitting anyone.

      • they need to get rid of the dog…. This women no longer has the mental capacity to care for it… my great aunt has nearly killed our dog giving it food that are toxic to dogs… she knows she shouldn’t… I know this because when we catch her she pretends she is doing nothing, or hides her hand, or fork… we have told her not to…. she still does it…. we have vet bills that are no longer affordable… we have to rehome the dog because we fear the next time she will kill it.

    • You remind me of the social worker in Lake Worth, Fl, back in the 90’s, who refused to remove the 10 yr. old stepson of a woman who’d been reported multiple times for child abuse. (One of the lesser tortures was making him weed the yard with a pair of rusty scissors, while sporting a T-shirt she’d made for him, that read, “I’m a piece of $h*t”.) She thought the ‘mom’ was overwhelmed, and just needed a little re-training on coping skills, etc.-Not long after, “mom” beat him nearly to death, then carried his almost lifeless body to the next door neighbor’s, and drowned him in their pool, to make it look like an accident. The bruises bore another tale. Come to find out, he’d been forced to eat cockroaches, and his dinner out of a dog dish on the floor. The Social worker was fired, naturally, and it caused an overhaul in Florida’s DCF, but too late for him. Your ‘understanding’ is incredibly delusional, if you think better pay & training would have prevented this. There are monsters in this world, and they roam around on two legs. Stop defending the indefensible. You’re part of the problem, when you lay aside common sense, and refuse to believe some people are just plain violent, and have no conscience. Let her get her training behind the bars of her cell, where she belongs. And you? You could use some re-training too, before your job allows you to cause irreparable harm to someone, with your rose-colored outlook of evil.

    • Oh my goodness…First off there is never an excuse for abuse of any kind, animal ,or human. I have been a RN for over 20 years and a nurse for 10 years before that..First off Deb, I can see many of your objectives that you are trying to present here..but everyone needs to know private family paid caregivers not always paid minimum wage there are quite a few out there who get paid by the shift, some as low as $10 a shift..Hands on work is very hard on the caregiver both mentally and physically, but there is not ever an excuse good enough to me for any of them or us to abuse either physically or mentally..I have worked as a Floor nurse, Private homecare nurse , Nurse Manager and I have never held it against anyone be it Nurse or Aid to need to change off of a patient by trading or even to decide they have had enough mid shift. I must admit the burn out ratio is high, and it is not a job just anyone can do.I have had nurse aids come to me at the end of a shift and say..I wont be back, I just can’t do it..and I in return say to them, are you sure? and then I think to myself at least they are a big enough person to admit it. In this situation on this particular day the aid should have put the dog in the cage (which is clearly visible) anytime there was food present and maybe this situation would not have escalated..she should have also gone to the family and admitted that she was getting overwhelmed, and not have allowed herself to get to this point of abusing that elderly lady and probably long before this video was ever made,I can bet this one time was most likely not the first time. I also believe families should never put someone into a private home to care for a family member without proper background checking, even if it is your best friends family member that you are hiring, and do not hire before all the results come back, and I mean never not even for one day.The state of Pennsylvania has a wonderful law for anyone working with children or disabled adults in any form, even school coaches fall into this category, a fingerprint and background check to the FBI,for the place you are working as well as the place you live, then another background check by the DHHR that is for anywhere you have lived for the past 15 years as well as a check for all people that have resided in your own home for all those years..some culprits still get thru the system however it does protect a lot of helpless people from being in the hands of these abusers..I know this from doing years of homecare work in that state even tho I live in West Virginia..Families and Managers including me, we always want to think the best of people that we hire as caregivers as well as our coworkers, and yes we talk to one another who work at different places..but in homecare there isn’t anybody else at that house to see the actions of that worker when nobody else is around, there need to be stricter background checks than at a facility, because in a facility the workers always check on each other, and if someone is frustrated, another worker can intervene and take over the care.I am not blaming this on the family, not at all, families are not perfect, neither is management and sometimes follow their hearts instead of their head.I have heard horror stories about people that I have worked with in the past and would have never in a million years thought they would be capable of their actions. There is never any excuse good enough for abuse, never..

      • Oh Deb,
        Oh no you didnt.
You compleat and utter disgrace to social work you.
This elder and pet abuser and molester and batterer.
THIS IS A CLEAR CASE OF ELDER/SPOUSAL ABUSE. In its purest form. not to mention the batterer was on the old womans payroll. and in her house and the pet dog was also a member of the elders family. as said many times in this feed.

They are also care workers writing in here today who coluld never hurt a patient for any reason this will never be tolorated under any circumstance. no one ever should tolarate the laying of crewl hands and fists to an elder or a house pet.
your balony about overworked, blah blah shows you are part of the problem. i hope you and your evil complacency and your own abusive nature are revealed some day and to your clients and to your employers.
You are not fit to social work my garbage can that i kick to the street.
        Social worker? Indeed.

    • my guess is she has major vet bills from it being fed the wrong food. Our dog has nearly died thanks to our great aunt….. and no, we have no one to help us…… We are preparing to give up the dog for adoption… I am on the brink of being fired because my great aunt has no other care takers and I do most of the work… my great aunt has always been combative and frustrating… everything is exhausting….

      • My Mother-in-law is much the same way. We tried to help her and all she did was fight with us, she was mean to aides that came in to help her, refused to eat what we fixed, refused to shower, go to the bathroom, wouldn’t do a thing for herself so we had no choice but to put her in the nursing home. She was ruining my husband’s health. Ask yourself why YOU should be bearing the brunt of all of this for someone who obviously doesn’t appreciate what you are doing for them to begin with. Why do you owe her so much loyalty that you should lose your job and your pet?

  7. I cared for my Grandmother who suffered from Alzhiemers. While it is a grueling task and can be challenging at times, they can’t help it and it is a disease that is heartbreaking. To the social worker who said many don’t have proper training, common sense tells you that you don’t hit them in the head and do what this evil woman did. I had very little help and believe me there were times I felt like pulling my hair out, but to see how this poor defenseless 94 year old woman was treated was very disturbing. I really hope this woman pays for this big time.

  8. If she feels overworked or underpaid or burned out she needs to find a different line of work! Those are not excuses to beat a 94 year old woman!! There were other options she could have chosen! Such as putting the food away or removing the dog from the room until the food was put away. Never an excuse for this behavior. I’ve been a nurse for over 30 years so I understand being burned out but I can assure you I’ve never once beat a patient!!

  9. Caregivers if you don’t have compassion please don’t. Seniors ,babies and special need are at your mercy. Remember God see all.

    • Especially your ugly heart! How did you treat your mother as she was dying? Crap. You treated her lile crap because you are a heartless excuse of a human.

  10. I worked in home care for 20 years, those little ladies, and lets not forget men, were precious to me. They too are human, with feelings just like us. One lady in particular, I helped take care of had dementia, she could only remember many things for about 5 minutes and would ask the same questions over and over, but I never grew tired of telling her, because I knew she couldn’t help because she was that way, life just delt it to her, I loved her and treated her like family, and she loved me like I was family, she passed away several years ago, but I sometimes dream about being with her. I miss her like I would one of my family members. Always treat the elderly with respect because they deserve it.

  11. Now they just need to get some of the other people who work at nursing homes to not abuse these people and be prosecuted also. They need cameras in all nursing home. These poor people don’t have a choice

    • I fully agree with you Carol. There needs to be a surveillance on the employees cos if the old folk has amnesia, Alzheimer’s or dementia, they cannot defend themselves and their families probably can’t be with them 24/7 due to work or other responsibilities.

  12. In jail,
their are mothers, daughters and dog lovers. her perticular crime is considered reprochfull even by criminals.
She will have no friends. Even criminals have limits.

  13. you may need to give up your pets if dealing with an alzheimer’s patient….. My great aunt continues to feed the dog after we have told her not to… the dog has nearly died… we have wanted to slug her on a few occasions especially since she knows what she is doing is wrong… when we catch her she pretends she is not doing it or tried to hide, so she remembers… We need to rehome our dog…. I hate it…. more so because my great aunt has always been off… always refused to get herself mental health despite being well off.. .the doctors confided in us that was the biggest issue… she should have sought help 30 plus years ago…

    • May be you would give up your pet for your great aunt, but I would be re-homing my great aunt, she would find herself in a nursing home.
