Another dog participating in the 2017 Iditarod Race has died. A press release from the Race Committee indicates that the latest race victim is a three-year-old dog named “Shilling.”

The Race Committee information about the dog who died on Wednesday reads:

At approximately 10:30 a.m. this morning, Shilling, a three-year-old
male from the race team of Roger Lee (bib #10), collapsed and died shortly thereafter.
The incident occurred about ten miles prior to Lee’s arrival in Unalakleet.
A necropsy will be conducted by a board-certified pathologist to make every attempt to
determine the cause of death.

Shilling is the fourth dog to die in this year’s Iditarod race. According to a subsequent release from the Race Committee, the latest dog died from pulmonary edema:

The gross necropsy has been completed on Shilling, a three-year old
male from the race team of Roger Lee (bib #10), by a board-certified veterinary
pathologist. Extensive pulmonary edema was the most significant abnormality
determined. Further tests will be conducted in an attempt to identify the underlying
cause of the edema, and to complete the necropsy study.

On Tuesday, a four-year-old dog named Flash died outside of Koyuk. The gross necropsy results for Flash revealed that the dog died from acute aspiration pneumonia. Before Flash died, a two-year-old dog named “Smoke” perished from hyperthermia while being flown from Galena to Anchorage. The first dog to die in the 2017 Iditarod was a two-year-old male named “Deacon.” Deacon was part of veteran Iditarod musher Seth Barnes’ team – the dog collapsed and died on March 9, just prior to Barnes’ arrival at the Galena checkpoint.

  1. Outlaw the Iditarod. It is nothing but torture and exploitation of dogs. Owners and handlers should be arrested, prosecuted and punished for the torture of innocent, voiceless dogs.

  2. Are the dogs not up to this grueling race anymore? These are relatively young dogs and shouldn’t be dying like this. I think it’s time they put the dog’s welfare ahead of an outdated sporting event and call it quits on the Iditarod Race.

  3. They are dogs and it is a 979 mile race. iT happens, Dig some holes and move on to important stuff. Capture a replacement stray dog in any alley and move on. A dog is a dog, nothing more. People act as if these dogs are more valuable than people and I just don’t get it.

  4. Again humans try to use dogs to get them from point A to point B in the fastest time possible! If this is what humans want to do then by all means do so, but dogs are not meant to be pushed like this in these kinds of temperatures!

  5. No dog should die. Total known dog deaths is 150, since 1973. It is morally unjustifiable to have an entertainment activity that is expected to kill on the average of 3 dogs (the fittest dogs in the world), at every event based on past history. Since it is logical to assume this trend will continue, one can only conclude that the organizers, mushers, and spectators care more about the entertainment, and are willing to look the other way when dogs are likely to die in every race – or they would stop doing it. This is just not right. This senselessness must stop; this heartless, brutal race must end.

  6. The race need to stop those dogs are pressured to run so many miles ,so tiring and hard for those dogs…the dogs cannot complain the race should be banned so hard for those dogs…

  7. It’s like a race from New York to Florida in 9 days (around 1,000 miles) through snow, ice, mud, treachorous terrain, shallow icy water and dogs die during the race.

  8. Dogs have to suffer and die so that Neanderthals can have fun and compete for prize money and a new pickup truck. This is so freakin’ wrong!

  9. Thank you, Claire. Very well stated. I have a website where I share my experience of how the police and sheriffs K9 handlers lie about what they do to their dogs, and if they can no longer convince people that our own eyes and ears are not lying to us, they switch to rationalizing, and tell people that they don’t know what it takes to “train” a K9. The same methods are used by all exploiters in every avenue of abuse. I don’t know if links are allowed here, but the chapter of the website is “Denials and Justifications.” I believe the site can be found by that. There is another chapter titled, “Why?,” which further demonstrates how they lie about what they are doing.

  10. Because of the dog deaths, outraged citizens will protest tomorrow to encourage Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, one of the main sponsors of the Iditarod, to stop sponsoring the Iditarod sled dog race. Folks who live in that area are welcome to join and help.
    WHEN: Sunday, March 19, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
    WHERE: 2601 5th Ave., Anchorage, AK 99501

  11. I wish my comment of the protest today, at the Anchorage auto dealer, sponsor of the Iditarod, was at the beginning of this thread.

  12. STOP THIS ASSINE RACE!!!! IF YOU want to race, run….. if you are so keen on the cold put your butts out there and go for it!!! STOP forcing these dogs to MAKE YOU FEEL SPORTING!
