If not for the help of a team of good Samaritans, several animals who were held captive in closed stalls in one flooded Texas area were going to drown. A concerned individual alerted the self-appointed rescue team to the life-or-death situation and shortly thereafter, the animals were saved.

Gordon Bozant recounted what happened in a public Facebook post:

Myself and some others were called upon by a concerned citizen off of Coe Loop and Klein Road concerning horses closed up in stalls with water up to their neck and cattle struggling in the high waters. When we arrived, a couple of people already had a boat and we were able to get back to the barn. We were able to get halters on 2 mares and a stallion. We had to swim them out for approximately a quarter of a mile.

The animals were traumatized and exhausted from their ordeal…but they were alive. According to Bozant, they were taken to his ranch to recuperate. Thanks to the effort of this rescue team, three horses, a cow and her calf, two other calves and one chicken were saved. Tragically, other animals in the area were unable to be saved and thanks to the rising water, they will likely perish.

Bozant expressed disgust that the animals were abandoned in their stalls, he wrote:

If you read this post and they are your animals, why didn’t you get in touch with somebody that could help you?? Instead, you chose to do nothing and let these defenseless animals to die a horrible death.
And yes, the Sheriff’s Office has been notified of your negligence.

Bozant offered gratitude to those who participated in this rescue – he thanked:

Thanks to Marie Selby-BozantZach FelandBrandy StarcherAmanda KoesterTammy Dachs and Corby Walton for all your help in trying to save these animals. There are many others to thank who we have never met until today! Great job by all.

  1. How people can care so little what happens to their animals is beyond my comprehension. These animals and pets depend on you for their survival. Thank God for good people who DO care about these selfish people’s animals and go above and beyond to save them, there is a special place in Heaven for such people.

  2. I just don’t understand how people can do this!!!! They had plenty of warning before this storm hit and they had plenty of time to get them out to higher ground. I hope the Owners are found and charged with this abuse and neglect.

  3. OK HSUS where the HELL are YOU GUYS>>> Still down IN SUNNY PORTO RICO saving over 200 dogs… for the Glory of it ALL!!!!!! Guess what HSUS our dogs , cats, horses, cows, chickens, goats, sheep, NEED YOU GUYS all over TEXAS at the very LEAST>>>> some of that money donated by hard working people in the USA that went to Porto Rico … should be being SPENT RIGHT HERE IN THE USA!!!! NOW NOW NOW!!!!!

  4. Apparently this Site doesn’t want to deal with my comments on WHY the HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES IS NOT ON HAND RIGHT NOW IN TEXAS and THE GULF STATES>>> GUESS they SUPPORT the way HSUS operates… AT least over 200 Port Ricio dogs have been saved … and for that I am glad … what about our own USA DOGS !!!!!

    • you seriously need to learn patience – again, stepped away from the computer to walk my dog at the same time that you posted your comment – it has nothing to do with HSUS, which is, btw, in the area rescuing animals.

  5. What is wrong with these people of Texas! No heart no care for their animals. Bad enough this idiots, have 4 dogs. Why ???? It’s obvious they don’t care. Thank God for some good caring people who stop to help them.

  6. Many were rescued but unfortunately others were left to die. What value do those people have if they can leave an animal in a stall to die from drowning? Hopefully they will have some type of punishment. Pray for those who are helping others in the hurricanes path as well as the flooding. Drowning is a horrible way for an animal to die (as well as human of course).

  7. Did you save the dogs in picture that were trapped in the stall ? Please tell me you did, that image is stuck in my head???? How could people be so cruel, go hijack a few boats and get the rest of the animals out, the hell with it being illegal I am sure a judge would defend that.

  8. I hope everyone who abandoned animals, be it pets or livestock DO NOT GET TO RECLAIM THEM!!! Thank you to the wonderful people who saved this group of animals. May the owners never get them back!!

  9. My mind is screaming. I can’t bear the pain of these abandoned animals. There must be hundreds more in the same situation. I would risk it all to save my animals.

  10. Thank goodness for this life saving group of heroes! What a horrifying ordeal for these animals but glad they are safe now.

  11. ANYONE who has animals and leaves them to die in a situation like Harvey have no soul – hope you bastards can live with your useless selves – personally, if it were up to me, I’d leave the humans and go straight to saving the animals.

  12. Look if you can’t rescue the animals yourself, at the very LEAST, let them out of their pens!!!! It’s just horrible that someone would leave them TRAPPED!! For myself, my animals are part of the family, I would no more leave them behind than leave behind any other family member!

  13. How cruel!!! This is exactly why I freak out over incoming disasterous weather ……the animals! People have the ability to save themselves but the a lot of the time can’t…..EDPECIALLY when they are cruelly trapped by heartless owners! SICKENING

  14. Yes, by all means get that herd of cattle and horses on that kayak, rescue helicopter, private boat. Since waters rose by feet an hour, the ranchers and farmers were so negligent in having to get somewhere to call authorities to try and rescue the animals, and absolutely by all means when your home is filling up and you have minutes to get out, take extra time-however long it takes- to let all the livestock loose from all enclosures so they can run free everywhere./SARC. Ummm….kay. These are not dogs, cats, or pet bunnies folks. Can’t take them to the local shelter. It takes time to arrange shelter for the ones in danger! Ranchers are talking about trying to figure rescue plans; it isn’t easy and isn’t fast.
