In Greensboro, North Carolina the county animal shelter was fined $2,500 on Wednesday for leaving dogs outdoors with no protection from the direct sun. An inspection last week discovered a dozen dogs left outside in kennels made out of metal sheeting. In a previous report from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, the animal services director was told to stop placing dogs outdoors.

Drew Brinkley, the director of Guilford County Animal Services, resigned shortly after the news of the fine had been levied. County Manager Marty Lawing confirmed Brinkley’s resignation and stated they would be looking for a person to hold the position on an interim basis while  searching for a permanent director.

According to the Greensboro News and Record, Brinkley took over Guilford County’s Animal Services Department  August  2016, after the previous director, Logan Rustan abruptly quit a few months earlier. The previous, now-defunct United Animal Coalition, had lost its license after an investigation by the state uncovered dozens of examples of animal cruelty and neglect. Since the upheaval, the shelter has passed most of the state inspections, however state officials warned the shelter not to put the dogs outdoors without adequate protection from the sun:

“At the time of inspection, it was very hot and the animals were in the direct sun,” according to the citation from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. “These kennels have metal sheeting on top, sides and back … which intensifies the sun’s heat.”

It is not known why the shelter staff ignored the orders from the state, however the recommendations certainly were reasonable. Don’t shelter dogs deserve more than what they received? Weigh in on your opinion.

  1. Drew Brinkley should be put in one of those outside metal so called ‘kennels’ and left for 48-72 hours – watch his useless butt bake in the sun. Guilford County Animal ‘Services’ (and I use this word loosely) needs to take a BIG step up and stop hiring idiots who don’t give a shit about the animals – you don’t need a masters degree to care. Find a real human who will take care of the animals because their track record sucks.

    • D’accord avec vous, il n’y a pas besoin de diplômes pour savoir ce qui est bon pour un animal, il faut les aimer simplement.

  2. THERE ARE MANY ASSHOLES THAT DEAL WITH ANIMALS THAT SHOULDN’T. ALL THE EMPLOYEES AT THIS PISS ASS SHELTER NEEDS TO BAKE IN THE SUN WITHOUT WATER AND THEN DRAGGED BEHIND A TRUCK ON HOT TAR.

  3. WHY DID THE SHELTER IGNORED THE ORDERS FROM THE STATE BECAUSE THEY PLAIN DIDN’T GIVE A SHIT. GET THE HELL OUT OF THE ANIMAL BUSINESS YOU BUNCH OF SCUMBAGS

  4. Let’s hope the hard headed coward seeks a job outside of animal care. People in these positions should actually give a damn.

  5. Damn RIGHT he should resign! Better yet, he should’ve been FIRED!
Anyone who neglects these most basic protective elements of companion animal sheltering has NO BUSINESS being involved with them IN ANY CAPACITY!!!

  6. Probably “quit” before he was “fired” at least I hope they would have fired the POS! Any director that would leave dogs out in the hot North Carolina sun when warned against it isn’t fit to take care of animals! Let hope they get it right and find a caring director this time!

  7. As part of his punishment, put him in the same crate with his clothes on and see how long he can take it. You don’t have to have a degree or be intelligent to care about the welfare of any animal.

  8. I am glad to see the STATE of North Carolina Appears to be taking a better Look at how the Shelter dogs have been neglected!!!! let’s hope it continues to improve down there

  9. Do shelter dogs deserve more than what they recieve they ask? Absolutely…..if they manage to survive long enough! One thing I do know that this particular shelter needs to be CLOSELY monitored for at least the next 5 years because they have proven to be untrustworthy! Haven’t these homeless souls suffered enough? This shelter has proven that the well being of these already suffering dogs ranks at the bottom of the list as to what is important to them, and once again the dogs lose!! SMH
