39 pit bull type dogs at risk of being euthanized

An animal control agency in rural Louisiana issued a dire statement two short days ago about the fate of 39 pit bull “type” dogs who are being held at their facility. The dogs, who are described as “unwanted,” have had no interest and time and again, potential adopters have passed them by.16487712_1490973127603723_8261754988028462200_o

The St. Landry Parish Animal Control wants to save the dogs, but they are apparently out of options. On February 10, a sad notice was issued to followers of the animal control Facebook page:

Starting Wednesday February 15…we will sadly have to euthanize 39 pit and pit type dogs. They have not been claimed…they are unwanted. They are every color..Every size. The one thing they have in common…The word PIT. Each dog has been posted ….Each dog is unique …(PLEASE keep your negative comments to yourself …we are trying to save these dogs …With this post…your negative comments DO NOT HELP) SLPAC Opelousas La 337-948-6184

The post has since been shared over 2,000 times and it appears that some help has been sent to the dogs who are at risk. On Sunday, the animal control updated followers with a few words of hope:

We want to say thank you for all the LOVE & SUPPORT for these pits….we can try to hold them for a few extra weeks..giving adoption and rescue a chance..starting Monday we will form an album….BUT…we need 15 of these kennels….to move them to….It’s our only hope. These are 5×10 welded wire…must be welded wire to hold a pit type dog….and the shade top.

In order to accommodate the dogs, the facility is in desperate need of more wire kennels such as the one in this 16729081_1492127657488270_5143175724836516158_nimage which was shared to the animal control agency’s Facebook page. Friends Underwriting Rescues is also accepting donations on behalf of the animal control agency (click here).

SLPAC is located at 255 Hangar Road in Opelousas, LA. Hangar Road is off of Hwy 749. There is a small sign. The road is next to the National Guard Armory. The facility is near the end of the road on the left just before the airport.

    • It isn’t the shelter’s fault. We have so many awful backyard breeders constantly breeding these dogs and not enough homes. For every one dog shelters and rescues are able to save, 7 more puppies are born. It’s a horrible cycle and they’re a small, rural shelter with not much funding. They want to save the dogs, but it’s a community problem and it’s statewide. 🙁

      • It’s a never ending process and disheartening most times, but thank God this shelter IS trying to reach out for help and willing to hold them if help is coming. I wish people would spay and neuter and especially quit breeding for profit. Everybody but that backyard breeder suffers because of it, even the dogs most times.

      • Then they need to reach out to other shelters and rescues not just do nothing. There are open kennels in other states with transporters avail it is their fault for just sitting there not having adoptions outside if their facility. My god save them do something besides nothing but run a shelter.

    • How many did you foster? I rescue and foster and the ones that scream the loudest about the injustice seldom, never, foster. Maybe you donated a kennel instead?

    • I read an article yesterday that Tia Torres, owner of Villlalobos Rescue Center, has stepped up and is going to help! Thank God! The article also stated that none of the dogs will be euthanized! Again, Thank God! Just wanted to let you know, in case you didn’t know already.

    • They are such loyal animals. The City of Poughkeepsie in New York was the first to rescue and train a pit for their K-9 unit. Kiah is living proof. Why pay thousands of dollars for a pure bread when you can find shelter animals that are in desperate need of a home and purpose.

  1. Oh god please please help use to help your beautiful creations our once pets someone please adopt or help so they can get more wire cannal s in Jesus name I pray this is not right to kill them just wrong

  2. There’s no reason to put these beautiful dogs down! If there is no interest there then you send them where they will be able to find safe homes! No dog should be arbitrarily put down! Nor should any animal for that matter! I don’t know the circumstances these dogs came in under but from what I have been able to gather they are gentle and loving! Give them a chance to find forever homes!

    • It is not due to lack of interest!! This shelter will not foster out or adopt pit bulls!! I’ve tried before! They will only let them go to a 501 rescue. I live in a neighboring parish & share their posts of adoptable dogs on FB but until this article came out about needing rescue/fence or they would be euthanized, I had NOT SEEN THESE PITS!!! There was no gallery of pictures with the pits until a couple of days ago!!! How do you adopt out dogs without pics? Just trying to set the record straight! There are many who care & would adopt if they could!! I saw 2 girls in the gallery I would love to get!!

  3. Has anyone tried to contact NY BULLY CREW, located in Brooklyn, NY. NYBC focuses on bully breed rescue. Pls forward this info to them. They will help or atleast have an idea of where to reach out to help.

    • This shelter will only allow pit bulls to go to a 501 rescue! No foster – no adoption!! I’ve asked to adopt in the past & the answer is no!! I live in a neighboring parish & follow them on facebook!! I share their posts to help get dogs adopted!! I have NEVER seen these pit bulls until they posted for help & created this gallery! Didn’t know they had any!! Just keeping it real!! It’s NOT for lack of interest!!

  4. Start implementing harsher sentences on dog fighters, have only permitted litters that must chip dogs before selling, and hold accountable those that “throw dogs away”. Here in Texas we deal with the same kind of scum. There are many northern states that will take responsibility rescues and volunteers for transportation. Reach out far and don’t give up. Pit bull are amazing animals. All animals and children learn what they are taught.

  5. THIS IS AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!THERE ARE NO PICS OF THE BABIES THAT WILL BE KILLED ON WED.!HOW DO YOU EXPECT US TO SHARE THESE BABIES IF THERE IS ONLY THIS PAGE TO SHARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WE NEED PICS AND INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. So, is there a rescue stepping up? Do they need donations? What is the website where the dogs can be viewed? How about some helpful information for those of us who’d like to help?

  7. This sounds like a shakedown to me.
Threatening to kill unless they are provided with kennels ?
The whole thing smells like dogshit.

    • REALLY???? When was the last time you volunteered at this or any shelter? Most shelters are beyond capacity which is the problem here. And more dogs are coming in. Before you post OBNOXIOUS comments, you need to research the facility. I’d say have a nice day but with your attitude, you’d find something to complain about.

    • I worked for this shelter about 4 years ago. It really is this bad!! When I worked there we had 0 help. We euthanized 60+ dogs a week, there was only 23 kennels. They have expanded and now hold over 100 dogs at a time. And try their best to not euthanize. This is 100% real.

      • Is this true:

Is what he says true? If so, there’s a big reason why these dogs are in such jeopardy, & then stating they have no interest is not true. While there is an overabundance of pit type dogs in shelters everywhere it seems, not marketing them from day1 using petfinder, adoptapet & posting/cross posting on social media is a huge disservice & often the difference between life & death for these dogs. Just check out the Urgent page for the death row dogs of NYC ACC & note the bio’s & video/pics that accompany ea dogs post. Without those posts so many more would be dead. I know, because it was what moved me to pull my last dog (a pittie). I adopted him based on the notes & description attached to his post

  8. We can sit here and talk shit to them or we can try to help them anyway possible. My son and i will be reaching out to them since we have 3 put bills ourselves. It’s easy to criticize but it’s not hard to help them.

    • I live in a neighboring parish! I have asked to adopt a pit bull. I also raise pits! I was told no! Only 501 rescue can take pits! I posts many of their adoptable dogs on FB but I have NEVER SEEN THESE PITS!! I know for a fact these pictures were only VERY recently taken to make this gallery!! If you want to adopt pit bulls out, shouldn’t you have picture? Just keeping it real – I saw 2 females in the gallery I would love to have

  9. No need to get mad at the Animal control. Get mad at the people who breed, don’t spay or neuter. Don’t be on here bad talking people doing their jobs. Get out there help be part of the solution. Share, go their walk the dogs, donate. Do I think it is OK to kill ANY animal? NO, euthanizing shouldn’t be allowed! I think every animal should be in a home, loved and living the life. Cussing people out just falls on deaf ears.

  10. I live in California and just my dear Koko, pit to sleep, 17 yrs old but I am 70 and would like to get another who is passive, not high energy or that he and I could be a fir……….let me know

    • Hello, as I totally agree these poor babies need rescue, there is a small, passive, beautiful little girl in Tennessee that is homeless. She is in a dangerous area and needs a home. She is fully vetted and sweet as can be. My name is Danni Laffoon and you can message me on FB if you are interested.

  11. One million pit bulls are euthanized in the USA each year. STOP breeding this type dog by mandated by law spay and neuter. If pit owners WON”T do the right thing, then the law needs to require it for the breed’s protection. There is NO excuse for this. Pit bulls are filling our shelters USA-wide. This problem cannot be solved by adoption.

  12. thanks Penny for this wonderful writeup. We all need to get these animals rescued and rules at this place need to change. the town needs to allow public adoptions where people can adopt them direct from the shelter and not just put them as Rescue only just cause of breed.

  13. Please Contact Every Rescue And Rescue Friend You Know. SHARE THIS POST . IF EACH RESCUE TAKES ONE WE CAN GET THEM OUT. THAT’S 39 RESCUES COME ON SHARE

  14. I work in animal rescue and it is nearly impossible to adopt out a pit bull. We had to stop taking them people simply do not want to adopt them. It is so sad but until people stop breeding we are going to have this problem.

  15. I am so tired of people passing these dogs by because of ignorant thinking that they are vicious, aggressive and unworthy of adoption – it is the humans who treat them like garbage and abuse them to the point these dogs strike out – THAT IS THE PROBLEM – HUMANS! Pit Bulls are great dogs and anyone that has ever owned one knows this – give these dogs a chance – SLPAC should start educating potential adopters – this would go a long way to get these animals out of this shelter.

    • This shelter does not allow adoptions for pits!! I’ve asked before!! Only 501 rescue!! I own 2 pits – I know how wonderful they are!! I live in a neighboring parish & I post many of their adoptable dogs on FB BUT I have NEVER SEEN THESE PIT BULLS until today!!! I know for a fact this album of pit pictures is only a couple/few days old!! How do you adopt out pit bulls with no pictures? Just keeping it real…

  16. Praying for all of these babies…I hope they are saved…I know this shelter does the impossible and tries their hardest to save each and every animal…let’s hope rescues are able to help or maybe we people can donate and buy more kennels.

  17. They are asking for donations as a way of helping care for these dogs. If no one gives, then they say they will have no choice but to kill them. Honestly, I do not think murder is part of any solution. So, what is needed are DONATIONS and those with an open heart to SHARE, ADOPT, and FOSTER one of these dogs. This is not a refrigerator that you are cleaning out, these are LIVING BEINGS who are Dependent on Human beings for care. They have no voice.

    • Pit bulls cannot be adopted or fostered from this shelter!!!!! They can only go with a 501 rescue. I live in a neighboring parish & have tried to adopt a pit from them & could not! It is not allowed!

I follow their posts & share adoptable dogs on FB. I have NEVER seen these pit bulls!!!!!

      • I have seen this foolish policy. You can still offer on their page to foster for a Rescue and then a Rescue can pull them as they would then have a place for them. Rescues have no facilities to keep dogs or cats…they use fosters

  18. Barbaric murdering maggots

There is no reason to murder

If you can’t get them adopted or rescued then
    You’re NOT DOING YOUR JOB

KARMA TO ALL KILL SHELTER DIRECTORS
    MANAGERS ETC….KARMA

  19. Why is it always the pitbulls being put down? This is so wrong. It clearly is not the dogs fault its the PEOPLE who breed them for the wrong reason and give them the bad reputation. Im so disappointed in the human race its unreal. WAKE UP PEOPLE AND FOCUS ON THE REAL PROBLEM. NOT THE PITBULLS. THENSELVES THE PEOPLE WHO FORCE THEM TO FIGHT

  20. Hi my name is edgar ara I am willing to be a foster home for 2 of the 39 Pitbull’s I live in Plainfield n.j my phone number is 9082057963 I am willing to foster them untill they find a for ever home

  21. It’s not fair to say these dogs are unwanted! I have asked about adopting a pit bull from them before & was told only 501 rescues could take the pits. There is a lot of over breeding…I agree! But I saw 2 dogs in the gallery that I would love (Annabelle was one & I think Vickie2). I spay & neuter. I share pics of their adoptable dogs all the time but I have NEVER seen any of these pit bulls! I live in a neighboring parish!!! Just setting the record straight – they are not all there because no one wants them!!! They are still all there because they cannot be adopted – only rescued from a 501

  22. Rescues are desperately trying to reach the director to arrange help do dogs in danger of PTS but sadly we recieve no response. We have no idea who needs out and who is safe for now. I myself will take on 1 dog . Also I’m in contact with other rescue organizations that are trying to help. We cant help without an open line of communication.

    • Can you reach Animal Control? I’d call the mayor’s office and the local newspaper to say that the Director is not taking calls. The county needs to fire him/her. This is being spread around the country, giving the county and town a bad reputation. Or contact the New Orleans T.V. stations and Times-Picyune newspaper.

  23. ARE THESE PEOPLE NUTS. THEY JUST WANT TO GET RID OF THEM. THIS HAS GOTTEN WAY OUT O F HAND. THESE DOGS ARE ADOPTABLE, HEALTHY AND WOULD MAKE GREAT PETS. PLEASE RESCUES, STEP UP AND SAVE THESE BABIES WHO DID NOTHING BUT BEING BORN A BREED THAT HAS BEEN WONDERFUL UNTIL WE GOT OUR HANDS ON THEM.

  24. There are several groups working as we speak to help rescue these dogs. Please do not inject negativity into this conversation! This is counter productive and we need people who can help, not use this as a forum for policy changing. Get off of the bench and help these dogs for their sake! The shelter needs more temporary kennels to hold these dogs, so contact them and see how you can help!!!

    • Thanks. Get tired of all the negativity from the armchair keyboard trolls. Posting negative and “heresay” comments on the shelters page does nothing good. Thanks

  25. I called out St. Landry on their page for failure to respond. They posted this:
St. Landry Parish Animal Control & Rescue–All dogs can be adopted through a rescue…a rescue has even stepped in…they are taking applications now..FUR FRIENDSUNDERWRITINGRESCUES.ORG

  26. I hope ans pray that there are some organization group that can help these poor unwanted souls. I want to know, why the shelter does not do more to have these babies adopted, This these state not allowing Pit bulls. and if so why. These babies if taken care right, are wonderful dogs to own, there is nothing wrong with them, are caring. loving and take wonderful care of kids and the family. People are so ignorant! I am sharing far and wide to be their voice.

  27. FOR GOD’S SAKE AND FOR DOG’S SAKE THEY ISSUED A PLEA 2 DAYS BEFORE THREATENING TO SLAUGHTER THEM, ALL SENDING THE USA ANIMAL RESCUE COMMUNITY INTO A PANIC AND AN UPROAR!! HOW UNCONSCIONABLE, THEY COULD BE CALLING EVERY PIT BULL RESCUE IN THE COUNTRY AND BORROWING KENNELS, THEY JUST DUMPED THIS INTO OUR LAP AND SAID HEY WE ARE GOING TO KILL 39 PITTYS IN 48 HOURS UNLESS YOU DO SOMETHING!! WHY DIDN’T THEY ALREADY DO EVERYTHING??? WE CAN SAVE THEM ALL! KILL THE KILL SHELTERS, IF IT IS A KILL SHELTER IT IS NOT A SHELTER AT ALL!

  28. Stop blaming these dogs for being mean and biting there former owners treated them that way so they would protect and bite.blame the people.don’t punish them keep them alive if you put them then you shouldn’t work for animal control.only heartless people put animals down.suck it up keep them alive.try harder

  29. This is SO horrible ! ☹️ NO innocent animal should EVER die due to overcrowding ! I hope and pray these beautiful dogs are all rescued !

  30. […] In a landslide of emails and media attention, the Villalobos Rescue Center, founded by Tia Torres of Pit Bulls and Parolees, announced Wednesday on social media they were stepping up to help the pit bulls in the St. Landry Parish shelter who had been marked to be euthanized. Just days ago, the Louisiana shelter  stated the dogs described as “unwanted,”  had no intere… […]

  31. I think Villalobos will be able to help get these babies another chance, I really believe the shelter needs to rethink their policy about doing more to have their dogs adopted or foster, rather than just going with 501 rescue only. I hope Tia will be able to educate them to do things differently. Who ever runs these type of Shelter need to redo and rethink the way they run their shelters. These pups have No one there to be their voice. Maybe Tia will be able to change that. Bless Tia, I just love and admire her so much for what she does for the pit bull and other dogs as well. She is truly an angel put on this earth to help these babies.

  32. Is there any way to send them to other shelters even if it’s in other states.
I live in New Hampshire and there are people looking for pit mix.

  33. Im a proud owner of 2 pits one that’s deaf.
This isnt proper its all in how you raise them.
They are lovibg sweet animals just like any other.
I would be glad to take in one from the shelter to save its life …

  34. No pity, euthanize these beasts. Expend your energy on normal dog breeds you can trust not to maul and kill pets, children, adults and livestock. We see the exponential increase in death and disfigurement mirrored in their increased adoption rate as pitbull propaganda spins out of control.
