Ailing senior at busy animal control

An ailing senior dog, suffering from a number of maladies, is locked away in a kennel run at a busy California animal control. The 10-year-old dog, named “Screwball,” is being held at the Los Angeles County Animal Control – Baldwin Park, agency.

Screwball has been at the animal control facility since January 6 – he is sick and he needs to be spoiled and pampered as he recuperates from his health problems, not surrounded by the stressful, loud barks and cries from other distressed dogs inside of the busy building.

On February 11, a woman who volunteers her time photographing the homeless dogs at this shelter wrote a post for Facebook on this dog’s behalf:

Screwball is a sweet 10 yr old neutered male black/brown Terrier mix who was confiscated from his owner on 1/26/17 (along with Mitzy – A4538826 – next photo). available 2/9/17. He has a bad case of dermatitis, infected eyes and seems to have a bad case of kennel cough 🙁 He’s very affectionate and deserves a soft bed to land in ASAP.

Mitzy, Screwball’s canine friend, is also in need of help. Mitzy is a 12-year-old shepherd mix who was seized from her owner along with Screwball – Mitzy’s Petharbor ID number is A4538826.Mitzy, 12-year-old shepherd mix

It is apparent that Mitzy and Screwball have been dealt a difficult hand – life has not been easy – life has not been kind. Please share their adoption information and help them find the help that they desperately need and deserve.

  1. Senior dogs get a raw deal much of the time! They tend to be very quiet laid back and don’t make themselves know in shelter situations! Most people adopt puppies and the older dogs end up being put down! High kill shelters are the worst place for senior pets especially if they have health problems! The number of animals killed every day is disgraceful to begin with! We need to do away with kill shelters! Every animal deserves a chance to be loved and live a happy life! Adopt a senior pet you’ll be happy you did!

    • I agree 100%. I’ve adopted 2 senior Yellow Labs (the first senior adoption was an “accident” as he wasn’t listed as being a senior but 2 vets independently of each other confirmed it after I adopted him). He was PERFECT and thus began my love affair with senior Labs.

  2. WELL I sure don’t SEE FROSTED FACES STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE ANY MORE>>> WHAT IS the DEAL HERE WITH THEM THIS LITTLE guy deserves a CHANCE AS MUCH AS ANY OTHER LITTLE ELDERLY DOG>>>> No body has even bothered to comment on himmm..after all he is one of God’s creatures TOO IS HE NOT?????

      • First OFF, my dear, I live over two thousand miles from the facility and the State of California and they do not do rescue to out of state ( as noted numerous, numerous times prior to this post) second I am doing my part in rescue to the max. I have 19 small breed rescues ranging from age 6 yrs to 16 years old. One large breed age 7, 5 rescue horses, and one new addition this fall a Molly Mule. Does that meet with your ideation of trying to make a difference in the animal world or not! Thank you! how many rescues do you currently have?

  3. I think they are both beautiful. I love senior dogs; they are mellow and usually already housebroken and they are appreciative of the love they get. I wish I could adopt them all. Praying someone has room in their heart and home for these two.

  4. He’s been there since January 6 and they haven’t bothered to get veterinarian treatment for him. That makes the “shelter” as bad as the POS owners.

  5. Save this poor innocent baby. Anyone who can treat a beloved animal like this baby needs to be charged and PLEASE help him get the treatment he deserves.

  6. OK Baldwin Park – we are now aware of your lack of concern for these two dogs and have hidden them away until you can kill them – your maltreatment is evident – both Screwball & Mitzy DESERVE medical care and the chance to be adopted and YOU are denying them. This is a prime example of an agency that is supposed to HELP animals and comes up very short. These dogs have never had a good life and this shelter is not even attempting to help them – DISGRACEFUL!!!

  7. Have these two dogs found safety ??? Has ANYONE or any group stepped up for them ? These dogs at these shelters being killed is outrageous !! There are other shelters AND rescue groups out of state that have room for these poor dogs. The directors and people that run these high kill shelters do not resource alternatives to killing. To make some phone calls to other shelters to ask if they can provide space to save these lives. I live in Maryland and I know there are shelters here that will help take dogs. But they can only help if they are contacted.

    • I too have been “carping” on that … I get so frustrated seeing all the DONATION MONIES that HUMAN SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL and some private rescue groups spend , for the health checks, transportation fees, documentation fees, fees for escorts when the USA has places like Florida, California, Texas, that are Killing the dogs born here IN THE USA because there is NO ONE to adopt them…. I most certainly feel for the our of Country Animals , BUT HOLY CHRIST It sickens me to see the animals here have to die to make a place for a dog from CHINA!!!
