In Eugene, Oregon, Greenhill Humane Society and Lane County Animals Services rescued 98 small breed dogs -most of them Chihuahuas, from a hoarding situation in western Lane County on Monday. The owner voluntarily surrendered all of the dogs.
According to a press release from the Greenhill Humane Society, the dogs had been living in extremely overcrowded and unsanitary conditions both indoors and in outdoor pens. The dogs “ranged in age from newborn to senior, including dogs that are pregnant and nursing.”
All of the dogs are currently in the Green Hill Road shelter and are receiving preliminary medical and behavioral evaluations; they are all being treated and cared for according to their needs. Each dog will be given a complete medical evaluation as well as rehabilitative care if needed. They will be spayed, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before they are made available for adoption. Sasha Elliott, the Greenhill spokesperson added:
“Right now, financial support is needed to care for these animals. We will let everyone know when we are looking for adopters, but right now, basic care is critical. Without any known history of veterinary care, we are currently determining what each individual animal needs to start the next chapter in their lives happy and healthy.”

Guess we should be grateful that the hoarder voluntary surrendered all these animals. Yes, they will be taken care of, but more dogs added to the over population of greedy people who want to make money off of breeding dogs until they are spent, and then dump them. We need laws enforced and stop puppy mills now. Breeders must be registered and a record of how many puppies they breed in a year. There are people who even breed dogs in an apartment and then sell the puppies until the dog can’t produce any more, then the mother dog is dumped at a high kill shelter.
I’m hoping the pups all find living homes. Hoarders are sick, pathetic OCDers. And when they horde living creatures, that’s where I draw the sympathetic line because their affliction harms those who cannot speak for themselves.
