The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and the Arizona Animal Rescue Mission shared an update on the abused 2-month-old husky puppy named BB Bear on their Facebook pages Sunday night.

“Sunday Update on our sweet amazing BB Bear aka Phoenix…..Phoenix is rising!!!!!!
Today our amazing miracle boy has drank water from a bowl and in this video you will see he is beginning to eat. It may be hard to see for some, but keep in mind he is still heavily sedated. This is a HUGE step in the right direction. He still has such a long way to go rebuilding his skills, but this is so promising. We knew he was a fighter and because of the BB Bear community, supporting, loving and donating we have all come together to give him a chance at life. Today is a great day for all.”

The puppy had been placed into a medically induced coma after he had been brought into the shelter with a severe skull fracture and inter-cranial bleeding. According to the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control Facebook entry by Eva Boyle, authorities believe someone deliberately caused BB Bear’s injuries. Although the puppy is still heavily sedated, he has been eating and drinking on his own which is an excellent sign towards his long road to recovery.

Although veterinarians were unsure if BB Bear would be left blind and possibly lose his sense of smell, the latest neurological testing indicates the adorable little ball of white fluff may not have suffered any damage to his brain stem. He still might be able to recover over time.

“Yesterday we were given some of the most hopeful news yet. Three top neurologist from around the country have reviewed BB Bears records. All have stated that because of where the injury to the skull was, it appears that there was no damage to the brain stem. The area of the brain that was affected given his age, HAS the ability to rejuvenate over time.”

“This is a HUGE step in the right direction,” the Facebook post about the pup’s recovery stated. “He still has such a long way to go rebuilding his skills, but this is so promising. Today is a great day for all. Tears of joy from all of us at AARM, Two Pups Wellness Fund and Phoenix Dog/Cat/Bird Hospital.”

  1. Thank you everyone for helping this poor baby! How anyone could abuse such an innocent being is horrific beyond belief! It is so sad to think we have such sinister people in our society that think nothing of abusing such innocent beings. Thank you again everyone for helping this baby, and fighting for him. God bless you all!
