A young police canine, with the Benton Police Department in Arkansas, has passed away. On Monday, the Benton Police Department released information about Friday’s death of “Ares,” an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix.

According to the department, though Ares was on a heartworm preventative, he contracted heartworms last year. After completing a series of treatments, veterinarians cleared Ares to return to full duty several months ago.

The department has stated that foul play is not suspected in Ares’ death, but his body was taken to the Arkansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Little Rock for a necropsy which should provide more information about why the young dog died.

Ares, a dual purpose K9, trained in both narcotic detection and criminal apprehension, was given his name by students at Benton Middle School. A contest, including written essays and drawings, was held prior to the K9’s name selection and out of 80 entries, the name suggested by Emilee Faith Millerd was chosen as the winner.

The department expressed words of sorrow over the loss of Ares:

Ares service is appreciated beyond words and the department will miss him immensely. Thoughts and prayers during this time are appreciated.
