Freelance writers, Cheryl Hanna and Penny Eims, provided current pet-related content to Examiner.com for the past several years. Earlier this month, Examiner.com unexpectedly shut down the site, leaving the writers without a source of income, and readers without the pet-related news that they had come to rely on.

In an effort to continue providing information to both of the writers devoted followers, the Pet Rescue Report was created. Response to the new site has been positive – unfortunately, there are so many readers the the costs associated with the maintaining site are far outweighing the minuscule earnings.

Hanna and Eims desperately want to continue doing what they do best – writing about dogs, cats and other animals, keeping readers up-to-date on the latest news, and helping at-risk animals who are in need of help.

This particular post is a plea for help – the writers are hoping to find people who are willing and able to provide suggestions for a better website design, ways to secure advertisers, or other ways to keep up with rising costs.

The writers are asking that anyone who wants to see this website continue, and thrive, to comment on the article itself, or send suggestions to [email protected] or [email protected].

A GoFundMe account has been established for readers who would like to help this site succeed. Please click here to read more.

  1. Maybe start a go fund me, PayPal, etc to help with costs. I read your news regularly and so many animals have been saved due to your efforts.

  2. I’m saddened to think we might lose this platform too. I am computer illiterate and had no idea there is a cost involved to posting your articles. I have no idea how to help. I hope there is someone of your readers that does.

  3. To entice advertisers you may need a bigger and more ‘professional’ site for which you would have to pay someone to set up (unless you have family or friends able and willing to help out).
Advertisers is more tricky: animal and environment orientated obviously comes to mind. To appeal to your readership you need to take a survey of us (many free survey sites like mail chimp are on the web) and search out relative advertisers.
Have you considered getting together with some of the other examiner writers that were also displaced. I personally am following several more of you on other platforms. There is more strength in unity!

Whatever road you eventually choose, please bear in mind that some of us are not on Facebook (for commenting etc).

  4. Oh, no. I did not know that! So they did even tell the reporters? We need to get the word around. The more subscribers they have, the more money they can make to pay their reporters. I will share on the list of 300 FB pages in South Carolina that I have.

Also, in case you don’t know, here is a website with help and tips for fundraising for non-profits on social media…they have lots of good articles on how to make your website and FB page better and raise money.

Also, you definitely need a FB page.

  5. Definitely consider ads, but please keep in mind the complexity of the ads as many that do pop-ups, or require repeated closing of them turn readers off, and slow down loading and viewing for readers.

I was so glad to see a new platform up and your FB page, I’m very disappointed that Examiner and parent company didn’t have the general courtesy to give you guys enough (any?) notice.

  6. Why can’t the writers write for other online news? Or start a blog that cost next to nothing? I know many many many times that articles in the Examiner were plagiarized from other newspapers or online articles, and some writers had to remove a story they posted as their own. Real news agencies are always looking for news and feel good stories so there should be no issue finding a place for your Pet News, if you are really the writer.

    • We have such a huge following that the web hosting fees are tremendous. What you are reading here is a blog post…starting it and writing doesn’t cost, but running it with a huge number of readers is expensive.

  7. I love the work these writer’s do and the difference it makes for many animals in need. By being able to share and network the needs of so many that are sick, abandoned, injured, and abused each and every one have a much better chance of finding a forever home and a better life. Please keep it going!

  8. I couldn’t figure out why I was not receiving emails from Dog News Examiner and went back to check the last time I got one. Sure enough, my last email was an article by Penny Eims on July 1. I did not know there was an expense, either. I have truly missed these posts.
