In a country where  the punishment for animal cruelty commonly adds up to less than a one dollar fine, another photo of deplorable animal cruelty has gone viral. This time, Shravan Krishnan, founder of the animal shelter Hotel for Dogs located in Chennai, India arrived too late to rescue  a Great Dane abandoned on the streets  after he was left to starve to death.

According to the Quint, the dog died after succumbing to “starvation and dehydration.” On Krishnan’s Facebook  page, he posted a photo of the dog and in a heartbreaking description stated:

“I don’t know your name. I don’t know your age. I don’t know who dumped you. I don’t know your history. I’m sorry that I couldn’t save you and hope you’re in a better place now.

We got a call from Karthik Selvaraj about a Great Dane which was abandoned in Royapuram. We tried to move him to a hospital, but unfortunately he died on the way.

Abandoning your dog is the biggest betrayal you could ever do. At least try and leave him at a shelter or seek help from someone. Don’t leave your dog on the road and let him die of starvation and dehydration.

This not how a life should end.

If I ever meet the person who did this to you, I promise you that I will break his bones!!! Ranjith Kumar

RIP.”

Sadly, more animal cruelty cases have made international headlines in India – among those a video of two medical students tossing a dog from a multi-storied balcony. The dog was severely injured but survived and was ultimately rescued by Hotel for Dogs naming her Bhadra. Even though the students were arrested and charged with animal cruelty, their fine was barely enough to make one sneeze. Before that a group of teenagers from Hyderabad burned three puppies alive.  And then followed the despicable incident, when a police horse died after being beaten allegedly by a politician, during a rally in Dehradun earlier this year. Under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which dates back to 1960 and has never been amended, the maximum fine for those who commit acts of animal abuse is just 50 rupees (Dh2.75). (.75cents) Politicians and activists in India have demanded an overhaul of the archaic animal cruelty laws to secure harsher penalties for animal abuse in India.

Rest in peace poor sweet dog. How you must have suffered.

  1. This is shattering and I am stunned by those who would allow a doggie to starve, even a stranger not caring, for this is happening far too often. I am heartsick to know that one could allow an innocent to die without anyone caring. I pray that the universal forces embrace all animals suffering on this planet and those who care less are cursed!

  2. India its time you stepped up as an administration and a government. The 21st century has ni place for this level of cruelty and disregard for life. Animals have figured throughout your history and culture . Your past was born on their backs its your turn to give them a future free from pain and abuse

  3. It saddens me how one can do dis to innocent animals. I want to help des animals in Patna Bihar n Noida UP. SPCA in Noida is not well equipped especially for night help. Pl suggest how to provide instant rescue/treatment to des animals. My group is ready to invest 10 lacs of Indian Rupees for dis noble cause.

  4. This just breaks my heart seeing this precious dog! It is so sad and makes me sick, just the thought of this dog no food, no water. And this dog looks like it had a chain of him. Cruel people…. Cruel world….

  5. So many Inhumane humans had to have seen and ignored this poor stray dog and shame on all of them for not offering food and water and some sort of shelter. I realize India is a third world country. But, you can’t tell me that someone couldn’t have helped this poor soul. They did not care and some day when they are in need maybe no one will help them either… GOD AND KARMA WILL TAKE CARE OF ALL OF YOU FOR NOT CARING AND GIVING LOVE WHEN IT WAS NEEDED THE MOST!

  7. Why not just let him go? He had a better chance of surviving. A bag of dog food cost less than that fricken chain! I have so much to say that probably wouldn’t be good for readers. All I ask is that a adult talk a moment to tell a child how wonderful animals are so they will hopefully grow to love them or at least respect them more. Please!

  8. To all countries who think animal cruelty is fine, we will never accept it, nor will we ever again buy your products or visit your country. Who ever commits these crimes against defenceless animals will get their Karma. Perhaps the parents should first be punished..for not teaching their children about caring for our friends. Totally sick making and.disgusting.

  9. Truly Unfathomable, Uncomprehendable, Unspeakable, Unethical, Uneducated, Unacceptable And Unpardonable; To Say The Very Least.

To Being With, I Earnestly And Humbly Hope, With All Of My Being, That Divinity, Be The One True Companion Of This Blessed Beautiful Innocent Vulnerable And Defenseless Soul, In His Lives After, Wherever, He Might Be; Keeping Him, In Every Which Way Forevermore.

As Do I, Earnestly And Humbly Hope, With All Of My Being, That By The Grace Of Divinity, His Innocent Little Soul, May Rest In Eternal Peace.

That Having Been Said, If I May, Do Kindly Pardon Me, But Our Human Kind Is Unworthy To Be Bestowed With The Blessing Of Life.

I Am Discomposed, Confounded, Speechless And Harrowed, To Learn That Such Inhumane Transgressions Are Happening Blatantly; Where Is Our Humanness.

If I May, I Earnestly And Humbly Hope, With All Of My Being, That By The Grace Of Divinity, We Come Together, As Humane Beings, To Do Right And Seek Justice For This Precious Little Angel And The Unbounded Angel’s Like Him, Who Are Senselessly Mercilessly And Barbarically, Abused, Tortured, Violated And Wrongfully Murder; The Inhumane Beings, Responsible For This Transgression, Must Be Identified And Rightfully Held Accountable, In Every Which Way.

Failing Which, I Dread Such Inhumane Dastardly Egregious Sadistic And Flagitious Beings, Shall Never Fear Of Their Thought, Nor Deed.

    As Mahatma Gandhi, Wisely Said And I Quote;

‘The Greatness Of A Nation And Its Moral Progress Can Be Judged By The Way Its Animals Are Treated’.

It Is Important For Us To Consider, What Does The Way We Have Been And Hope To Treat Our Animals, Say About Us; As Human Beings And Perhaps, As A Nation.

It Is Important For Us To Consider, What Does The Way We Have Been And Hope To Treat Our Animals, Say About Us; As Human Beings…

  10. Where were the people who must have seen this dog decline. Neighbors, relatives and friends all blind? They too can rot in hell. What is the matter with these people that they stoop so low, causing pain and suffering?
