A south Los Angeles man is under arrest after a cell phone video allegedly showed him beating a crying three-month-old puppy with a mop handle. According to AbcNews7, the disturbing animal cruelty situation occurred in October – the entire situation caught on camera by a neighbor who notified authorities.
Davion Shawntell Oatez, 24, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with two counts of animal cruelty with an enhancement charge for using a dangerous weapon when committing a felony. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles is leading the investigation. The video shows a puppy screaming in pain and fright as a man throws the dog to the ground several times. The neighbor also told authorities he saw the man beat the puppy with a mop handle also.
The puppy, named Fifty was seized from Oatez, and veterinarians examining him stated the dog “undoubtedly suffered from violent mistreatment and beating inflicted by its owner.” In a statement released by a spokesperson for the organization, the video was very hard to watch and hear:
“The dog was screaming and crying and the person was compelled to get out their cellphone and take video because they knew if was wrong…. We’re very fortunate that we have lots of people that care deeply about animals and have enough instinct to take video and share that with us.”
Oatez has since been released from jail and is scheduled to be arraigned later this month.
