Update: Emaciated dogs left to starve after hurricane as owner walks away

Investigators in Brevard County, Florida continue to search for the owners of two emaciated dogs left to starve in a home in Grant Valkaria. On Tuesday, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office updated the status of the dogs.

“I wanted to update everyone on the two puppies that were located and saved from an abandoned home on October 20, 2016. As you may recall, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office was called to check on the residents of 7815 Babcock Street, Grant Valkeria,” stated Sheriff Wayner Ivey. 

As we all love stories with happy endings, I am excited to share with you that since being brought into the South Animal Care Center, both dogs have made remarkable progress in their general condition and health. The dogs have been able to gain 20% and 35% of their body weight back in just under two weeks. They have gone from barely being able to stand, to being playful, affectionate, and active. They are eating well and are currently being treated for several medical conditions.”

According to the Facebook page of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office a concerned neighbor called authorities in reference to the apparently abandoned home. When deputies arrived, they discovered two emaciated and dehydrated dogs. Based on the horrific condition of the dogs, a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Cruelty investigator responded to the scene to initiate a criminal investigation.

And now this week, both dogs have been placed into loving foster homes where they will receive the individual care, attention and love needed to bring them back to full health. Their health will be monitored until they are ready to be adopted. 

As for the suspects who denied these two dogs of any possibility of survival, the investigation is still ongoing. Animal advocate and dog fan, Sheriff Wayne Ivey wants to assure everyone that his office and the State Attorney’s office is doing everything they can to bring those responsible to justice.
