A dog who is just four years of age has spent the last three years of his life living in a lonely kennel run at a shelter in Long Island, New York. The dog, named “Elijah,” does not have his own family, his own toys, or even his own bed – instead, his “home” is the Brookhaven Shelter.

On Thursday, the Desperate Dogs of Long Island Facebook page, which is helping to promote Elijah for adoption, described the sadness of a shelter volunteer, “She holds him close, holding back her tears… and she promises him every day, a family will come to take him home. Months pass, and she still promises- and he waits with her, because he believes in her- but a family…never comes.”

Adding:

And another day passes, and soon those days turn into years, and more nights spent all alone- with only a blanket on the floor to comfort him. How much longer can he believe her? No one wanted him then…and no one…wants him now.

Elijah is described as a healthy boy who longs for love – Elijah already knows his commands and he loves to please. Visitors are sure to encounter Elijah’s wagging tail and may even be treated to one of his kisses.

*Brookhaven shelter is now open 7 days a week- their hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 9:30-4, Thursday 9:30-8, Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 11-4

  1. Is Elijah OK with a small dog/or any other dog and cats? What is the likelihood of assisting with getting him to Alberta Canada ! ? I am not certain of any airline that might be willing to help and can someone help check this info. for me? I am praying that there might be someone to help in this respect ? We are in a beautiful rural area in Northern Alberta, Canada and we are in need of a large dog, because of crime. Last year one of our Rottie’s passed away (12 yrs.old), her sister just passed away in April of this year (13 yrs. old) . I would give this baby the most loving home that will make us all cry. Elijah deserves this…please can something can be arranged for an airline to get him up here???
