Stray dogs injected with cleaning agents in Mauritius to not annoy tourists

On the small island state of Mauritius, located amid the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and often regarded as one of the best African destinations, disturbing videos have been released showing stray dogs injected with cleaning agents to kill them so the animals do not annoy the British tourists. According to the Daily Mail, the videos show government employees acting as dog catchers chasing down stray dogs, whether or not the dogs are bothering anyone, and using drugs cut with cleaning solutions to cut down on costs, injecting the dogs to kill them. Nearby residents hear the dogs screaming in agony as the caustic solutions lead them to their excruciatingly painful deaths.mauritius-2

And then the dogs – some still alive and breathing are tossed into a truck and transported to the edge of a human cemetery and buried dead or alive in mass graves; all of this far away from the expanding British tourist trade.

A public outcry, four years ago, stopped the heinous practice, and government officials instituted a mass  sterilization project for the estimated 60,000 to 80,000 strays. Unfortunately the latest videos show the inhumane practice has again started – with hired employees paid for each dog they kill. The dogs are taken to the shelter in Port Louis where they are killed as the other dogs watch. One shelter worker stands on the dog to hold it down, while the other administers the poison through the chest in a hit and miss attempt of hitting the dog’s heart. The dogs stagger and slowly die – the other dogs desperately trying to escape the revolting inhumanity.mauritius-3

Alan Knight, head of the East Sussex-based animal welfare group International Animal Rescue (IAR) stated:

“Anyone with a trace of humanity will find this footage unbearable to watch. It is chilling to observe the callous indifference of the dog killers towards their victims. Mauritius promotes itself as a paradise island for international holidaymakers, but instead it is a veritable hell on earth for dogs.”

“This exposé shows that nothing has changed since IAR first revealed the extent of the problem 2012, and it will have serious consequences for the country’s tourist industry, for which the blame lies firmly at the door of the government.”

Many local residents claim their pets have been kidnapped, and they have to pay a high ransom to get them back. Poorer people don’t have the money to pay the dog killers, and their pets wind up dead. IAR and PETA have launched a petition, calling for an immediate end to the Mauritian government’s ineffective and cruel ‘catch and kill’ dog-control method and the introduction of a national humane dog program. People cherish their dogs now, and are frequently bringing in puppies to have them spayed or neutered.

Maybe if tourists knew how cruel the government of Mauritius are being to innocent dogs guilty of nothing except having been born because the animal birth control methods are ineffective, the tourist trade would stop and the dogs would receive humane treatment.

  1. Cruel, vicious barbarians! Of course they kidnap family pets to murder them as well as all the stray dogs they can find: scum like this has no conscience any more than they have a soul! Yes, they’ll end up in Hell, but how many innocent victims will they torture and kill before they get there? This evil practice must stop!

  3. These so called people are not human they are purchasing evil and to be eradicated by the same way they are murdering these poor babies

  4. This is sickening. This is wrong. This is upsetting. This is unnecessary. These aninmals have just as much right to exist freely and without being murdered as we do. This is barbarism at its worst

  5. Stupid, cruel, barbaric people…I hope this gets out to every tourist who even considers going there & cancels their trip!!!! This has got to stop immediately! !

  6. Utterly rubbish piece of journalism!! Littered with inaccuracies and lies: 1. The average worker does not earn £60! There are official statistics where you can check that. Moreover, if what you are claiming is true, then one should not bother having a dog in Mauritius, because this money (£60) would not suffice for himself! 2. 80% of the dogs have been snatched from doorsteps! That’s a complete lie!! I have 4 to 5 stray dogs in my neighborhood and at night they sleep at my doorstep. Now imagine that the MSPCA catch these dogs, how would you interpret it? Snatched from my doorstep… I would urge the journalists (JANE FRYER and ALLAN HALL) who wrote this (and may be conducted the supposed “undercover investigation”) to double check their info. If it’s an investigation, then let it be truthful; do not mislead people.

    • No matter how they end up there, this means of killing is horrendous, barbaric and inexcusable. Whoever participates in this is EVIL – soulless and heartless. There are NO EXCUSES for this. Shame on you for attempting to minimize it.

  7. RIP to all of the dogs who were so savagely killed. Your suffering is over. As for the POS who performed these vicious acts, I can only hope you suffer the most excruciating death ever.

  8. I can’t even watch the video just reading and seeing the pic’s is awe ful to me and these sick fucks should have the same thing done to them r.i.p all of the innocent babies who went through this awful treatment

  9. Excuse me, why is this for the BRITISH tourists? Twice as many FRENCH tourists visit each year. Don’t smear Britain with the actions of this independent country towards its animal population.

    • Honestly John, the intention is not to smear British tourists at all; it’s just to make them aware if they choose this as a destination.

  10. Tourists intending a visit there should be informed, somehow, beforehand , and then pistpone or boycott visits there until they promise to stop this horrific practice. That is one huge way to effect rapid change….

  11. It is cruel to kill these innocent dog, but this article is misleading.
There are so many stray dogs that when you walk on some streets they just come to bite you.
Its not stolen or kidnapped as says this article.
    Do your investigations properly.

    • No matter how they end up there, this means of killing is horrendous, barbaric and inexcusable. Whoever participates in this is soulless and heartless. NO EXCUSES for this. Shame on you for attempting to minimize it.

  14. Shame on the Mauritian government and thank goodness for social media. This barbaric behaviour of the Mauritian government has not gone unnoticed. Was in Mauritius this year and definitely noticed a huge increase in stray dogs. Our taxi driver informed us that Mauritians who do not want their dogs and puppies often dump their dogs in the forest. The Mauritian government should have put their tourists money to good use and opened more animal shelters. In this way, with the help of the various International Societies for Animals, this matter could have been addressed very differently. I will not be visiting this island again!!!!
