A soldier stationed at Fort Carson, in Colorado, left his dog with a friend while he went away on training. A series of unfortunate events led to the dog, a German shepherd pup named “Ace,” being adopted to a new family while the man was gone, reported Tuesday’s KKTV News.

The seven-month-old pup managed to slip away from his temporary care provider’s yard and he wound up being picked up and taken to the Land of Ahs Kennel in Fountain. Though the dog sitter went to the kennel to retrieve the wayward dog, she lacked proper paperwork to show ownership, and she was unable to get him released from the kennel’s custody.

Meanwhile, the young dog’s owner, Steve Munoz, was training in Ft. Irwin, California, where communication was limited. The kennel, unable to reach Munoz, and not having “proper ownership” documentation, held Ace for the mandatory period of time and then adopted him to a new owner.

Munoz told KKTV News about the wall he ran into after returning home and making an attempt to find out where his missing dog was, “I had documentation and photos of him. They said, ‘We know which dog you’re talking about, but you missed your period.'”

Munoz has a message for Ace’s new owner, “I know he’s a great dog, and you guys are probably in love with him as well; but I really, really would like to get my dog back. I will pay you guys any fees you paid for adoption or anything for maintaining him. I’d just really like to get my pup back.”

After KKTV broke the story, several people have visited the kennel Facebook page to voice their displeasure over the adoption of this soldier’s dog to someone else.

  1. I hope he is able to get his dog back, the shelter knew he belonged to a soldier who was unable to come and give the documentation to pick him up, they should never have adopted out Ace until they did contact the true owner. What would it have hurt to hold on to the dog awhile longer until things were sorted out. This is an appalling thing to do to a soldier serving our county! I hope the people who adopted Ace have a heart and give him back, it’s the right thing to do!

  2. I really thing the new family should return him to his rightful owner. The sad thing is, too many pets who are placed in the care of friends/family when someone deploys end up getting dumped at shelters – or just dumped. There are groups who help find fosters for these pets, but there are not nearly enough placements for all that need it and word about these groups just doesn’t get to who it should. I would love to see a group started that would connect all the smaller groups and that would be able to get word to those who need this help.

  3. This Soldier MADE the COMMITMENT to OUR COUNTRY to GIVE HIS LIFE FOR FREEDOM!!! Since the shelter KNEW the CIRCUMSTANCES that he was NOT ! ISAY AGAIN A STRAY! they could have bent the guidelines until the could get documentation!!! GOOD GOD !!! THAT IS A LARGE ARMY BASE and YOU WOULD THINK THE COMMUNITY INCLUDING this SHELTER WOULD BE MORE SUPPORTIVE of THE TROOPS that SUPPORT THE LIFESTYLE of THIS COMMUNITY!!!!

  4. I am sorry but proper documentation? Where was this shelters documentation? Especially since the dog sitter showed up and informed the shelter of the circumstances! This is almost like stealing! I bet if it was a mutt they would have held Ace. To whom ever adopted Ace please return him as our soldiers put their lives on the line to protect us and our freedom! The least we can do is make sure their property inthis case a beloved member of his family is kept safe and returned to them
