In July, the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County received a desperate plea for help from staff at the Kern County Animal Services facility, which was inundated with animals thanks to nearby wildfires. A two-year-old German shepherd, dubbed “Ruby,” was suffering with raging infections from mange which had been left untreated for far too long.
Volunteers with the rescue organization drove three hours (each way) to rescue the ailing shepherd who was in dire need of veterinary treatment. The rescue group stated, “When we saw her, our jaws dropped, we were so stunned, We rushed to bring her to safety. We can only imagine how much pain and discomfort she is enduring.”
Ruby is currently receiving ongoing treatment for the infections and mange – she is living in a foster home and trying to adjust to being a part of a loving, safe environment. Based on Ruby’s behavior so far, it is believed that she may have been someone’s forgotten “lawn ornament,” who received little in the way of care or love.
Ruby seems to sense that people are there to help her and as she continues to recuperate from her severe neglect, efforts will be made to help build her trust and confidence. Ruby’s recovery is estimated to be approximately six weeks – when she is healthy, she will be made available for adoption.
