Update 8/23/16: Devastating news – Emanuel was killed.

On a busy Monday, the Devore Animal Shelter in California is overcrowded  and have had to make life and death decisions. In three hours, unless there is a “plan” for eight-year-old Emanuel, a special pooch with no medical or behavior issues, this scared shepherd will die.emanuel the dog

  1. California should be a no kill shelters dam I’m from the north east. I hope this dog finds a home. I have a. Gsd wonderful dogs

  2. Sadly he is more than likely gone and the visit by the volunteer was his last interaction prior to being put down… I have no use For the California System as to how they treat their SHELTER DOGS in three quarters of the STATE!!! They REFUSE AND IDO MEAN REFUSE to work with any out of STATE RESCUES and WOULD JUST AS SOON EUTHANIZE than take an extra STEP to HELP the POOR ANIMAL LIVE A NORMAL LIFE!!!

      • Thank YOU Cheryl for confirming what I had feared would happen to him!!! I sincerely with there was something that could be done to Help change the minds of The hardheaded and unvested individuals NOT the VERY LEAST Governor Brown to whom I actually wrote and sent an article to about using out of STATE Rescue Resources ( of course NOT to hear a word from)!!!

    • Yes, it is horrible and sad but the blame needs to be shifted where it really belongs. BACKYARD BREEDERS AND IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS!!! Look at Craigslist on ANY given day and you will see hundreds of litters of puppies and kittens for sale. Inbred animals, mutts and purebreds. An animal shelter can only hold so many animals and without rescues or adopters they only have one other option to make room for all the unwanted pets being dumped and abandoned. MANDITORY spay and neuter with big fines will help curtail this enormous problem but local counties refuse to enforce this. While our shelter systems need lots of improvement we really need to stem the flow of all this out of control animal breeding. Can you foster shelter pets? Many more foster homes will also help the current overload until laws can be implemented or enacted to stop this rampant backyard breeding and puppy mills.

      • My Dear!! My husband & I have fostered, found furever homes, transported( at our expense) numerous dachshunds of all shapes and sizes, for over 24 years now…. We have finally this year quit taking in new rescues from the shelter and elders, that are having to give up their pet because they can no longer care for it.. We haven’t been gone from our home overnight for 24 years…. now is the time for us to care for the ones we have left thru their lives and maybe have enough time left of our own to take a trip to Hawaii before we join our loving friends that are waiting at the rainbow bridge… I feel I have the right to speak out about the horrible way many shelters, ( Especially CALIFORNIA do not do the just thing for the pets, that are dumped there) they have to move into the 21 century!!! We I can proudly State have a saved, rehomed, and provided for more than 100 dachshunds in the past …. Thank you.
