The Ohio man who killed a police K9 earlier this year has been sentenced to 45 years in prison. According to Wednesday’s publication of the Canton Repository, 23-year-old Kelontre D. Barefield received the stiff prison sentence on Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges stemming from the killing of the German shepherd named “Jethro,” and other burglaries.

K9 Jethro, who worked with the Canto Police Department, received fatal injuries after being shot in early January 2016.  Barefield had broken into a grocery store and Jethro was on duty, working the scene, when he was shot three times.

Jethro’s death sparked national outrage and it has prompted the creation of “Jethro’s Bill,” which would prohibit “a person from purposely causing the death of a police dog in the line of duty, by force,” reported My Dayton Daily News. The bill aims to create harsher punishment for those who intentionally harm police dogs.

K9 Jethro had been partnered with Canton Police Officer Ryan Davis, who credits the dog with saving his life.

  1. First I feel sad about the police dog who was shot 3 times. The dog is beautiful. What a waste of a K 9 police
Dog that just saved a life of someone at the station. I’m so happly that the owner is getting a large amount of time. That dog because of his bravery in saving lives, deserves a medal. Not a bullet. Rest in peace Hero.

  2. FINALLY JUST FOR ONE OF THE DEDICATED K-9 Officer’s !!!! I HOPE more OF the JUDGES will give out a sentence that MATCHES THE CRIME LKIKE this one did!!!!

    • Hmmm

Police officers kill hundreds of pets of innocent people every year. Most of those pets are dogs, and the vast majority posed zero threat to the officers. And yet I don’t recall more than a handful of instances where an officer was charged with anything for all those killings. And I don’t believe a single officer went to jail. It is a tragedy indeed that a dog died. But to equate the death of a dog with that of a human is indicative of a a sinister and dangerous cancer that is growing in our government today. And when you consider the thousands of unarmed citizens that have been shot, beaten and shocked to death by police offers just in the last 5 years alone, many of whom were already prisoners, none of which have resulted in the any serious jail time for the police officers involved, let alone the death penalty and this sentence becomes even more suspicious.

Cruel and unusual punishment is expressly forbidden under the law in America. This is a tragic example of precisely that. The double standard of justice in America has now become the triple standard. 1 for the common citizenry, a second one for law enforcement, and a third for the 1/100 of 1 percent and elected officials. To condone such unjust actions in support of this triple justice system is to condone tyranny, oppression and fear. And this tolerance of a justice system completely out of control will spell the end of the Republic in short order.

      • What part of ‘the dog was a police officer’ is failing to reach your tiny little brain? BTW, YOU, lecturing ANYONE HERE about cops killing dogs and how many they kill is laughable. There probably isn’t anyone who reads Cheryl or Penny’s stories that can’t quote the stats, so get off your perch because you do not belong there. Dogs are FAMILY. Animal cruelty laws in this country, for the most part, are LAUGHABLE and insufficient. You need to: grow the hell up, grow a heart; and gain some common sense when you fail to even get that a DOG IS A COP, and that scumbag is in jail for killing someone who was BOTH.

        In reply to maxiemom:

I am 60 now and have been a dog owner for 50 of those years. I love dogs and my Westy of 11 years sleeps with us at night. In fact, I love pets in general. But that is hardly the issue here now is it. Just as an aside, just who the hell do you think you are anyway? Oh wait, let me guess, your are actually a dog right? NO? Labeling any non human as an “officer of the law” and treating it as a humain isn’t just irrational and illogical, it is just plain silly. But even if one were to accept such a silly premise, clearly there is not equal application of the “law” regarding the murder of dogs. Let us be clear here: DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE. DOGS WILL NEVER BE PEOPLE. A DOGS LIFE CAN THEREFORE NEVER BE EQUATED WITH A HUMAN LIFE, even if his name is spot or “officer X”.

The issues raised during this trial don’t have a damn thing to do with pets in general, or dogs in particular. 45 years for the crimes this man committed is cruel and unusual punishment and therefore a travesty of justice. And in this case it has ramifications that bode ill for the entire country. And for the record, I wasn’t lecturing anyone, but clearly you are trying to lecture me. My response to your sophomoric little diatribe and thinly concealed ad hominem attack is to go suck an egg.

    • YOU MAKE AVERY VALID POINT!!!! This has really bothered ME for the last couple of years > IT HAS STEADLY GOTTEN WORSE!!! WE never hear the outcome from the departments WHAT if ANY JUSTICE took place.

      • You never hear because most times it is deemed a “tragic accident” even though if one of us did it to our dogs, we would be arrested. There seems to be a double standard as to punishment when it comes to police dogs. Don’t get me wrong, I applaud a law that punishes people who kill and hurt K-9s but I also think irresponsible officers who kill their dogs by leaving them in a hot car need to be punished too!

    • So true! Why are there not equally strict laws for those who are cruel to animals not in the police force. It’s commendable that the dog is a police dog but it doesn’t make it anymore of a dog than other dogs.

  3. Finally a sentence that makes sense. It always breaks my heart when one of these brave K-9’s gets killed by these low lives!

  4. the dog is the cops 4 legged kid wearing fur.so you hurt or kill a dog working or animals at all.you should be charged with the time you get for hurting or killing or mistreatment of a human kid.

  5. Now if we could only get these types of penalties given to ALL animal abusers, maybe we could STOP ANIMAL ABUSE, or at least reduce the amount of it taking place. ALL LIVES MATTER, whether they are K9 HEROES or just the animals that live everyday lives in our communities.

  6. I feel sorry for the dog and what a great outcome. What about the police that kill dogs for no reason, nothing happens to them. Dogs bark, dogs wag their tails, dogs approach you if your on their property. It seems to be okay for police to kill family pets on their own property and nothing happens. Maybe our police on Australia are better trained than in America because our police don’t shoot dogs because they bark or approach with a wagging tail.

  7. Should this man be sentenced? Yes. 45 years? That’s crazy. When there is a justice system that is extreme, it eventually leads to serious problems in society. It will ultimately lead to (further) distrust in the justice system, and there will be a trickle down effect in which people distrust police, judges, attorneys, and so forth. There are people who commit war crimes in which thousands die, but the perpetrators serve zero time or consequence. And then somebody kills a dog and gets 45 years. If you look from an international perspective, the USA justice system just looks insane.

    • I AGREE with U!!! No he shouldn’t receive 45 years in prison … WHY waste the taxpayers MONEY…. They should shoot HIM BETWEEN the EYES… BUT HELL this country is far to civilized to do that so WE spend money to keep this worthless SCUM BAG ALIVE!!!

      • Hmmm

Penny you speak with such compassion and conviction. You therefore must also believe that when police indiscriminately kill people’s dogs the courts shouldn’t waste taxpayers money on prosecuting the police and the court should just order to “shoot HIM BETWEEN the EYES”. Him being the murdering police officer of course. I know you are not suggesting that some dog’s lives are worth more than others now are you? Any more than you believe that a police officer’s life is any more valuable then a civilians and therefore demands a greater penalty if murdered. And of course you must also support the death penalty for every single police officers that murders a person/dog in cold blood as well right?

Thank you for reminding us that the Constitution specifically demands all citizens receive equal protection under the law as specifically spelled out in the 14th Amendment. An inalienable right which was written more than 150 years ago. Because after all, as a civilized country we must treat every citizen equally. Therefore this ruling was a clear and gross violation of the man’s Constitutional rights because police officers commit the very same crime and don’t receive any punishment at all.

      • I MOST Certainly believe the police SHOULD GET the very same TREATMENT as a “normal” psychopath!!!! There are such things as crooked cops, Black and White and yellow and Brown!!!! Just the same as I think the Black Lives Matter movement is a crock of B/S!!! Do you see them marching down the street for the Black woman murdered on the street with her little baby!!! Hell NO because the POS were (GUESS WHAT) HA!HA! Black !!!!! What the hell type of trouble maker and instigator are YOU anyway!!!! I believe in the right to carry and I do!!! and I would not hesitate to use the necessary force to protect myself, my family AND YES MY PETS!!!! So go crank someone else and their Chain!!!

      • Hmmm

The last time I looked this website was open to comments from anyone. So Penny I am a bit confused as to why you think some one offering their opinions on the subject in response to comments you made constitutes yanking your chain, let alone marking them a trouble maker or instigator. Surely you are not suggesting that anyone that disagrees with you is by definition such a person. Now I never mentioned or referenced either the 2nd amendment nor the right to carry in our discussions. One could therefore legitimately construe your comment regarding carrying a gun as an implied threat against me. So if anyone is guilty of crossing the line here, it is you Penny. Though I am sure that was not your intention.

In all seriousness, I have always been a staunch defender of both the 2nd Amendment and the right to carry. Furthermore, it is my firm belief that all human life matters equally. And to openly and actively support efforts that single out specific segments of the population which by definition and design excludes others, is not just immoral and unethical, it is unamerican. Whether such divisions are signified by race, creed, color or religion, they are all wrong and have no place in our society.

I meant no offense and harbor no rancor toward you personally Penny. I was merely trying to make a point. Perhaps I was a little heavy handed and for that I apologize. Have a good day.

      • I absolutely did NOT make an elusive threat to YOU or any one else For Christ Sakes! No I do not Feel for one Second that All HUMAN LIFE Matters Equally…. The Thugs, Dog Ring Fighters, Child Molester, Dirty or Dog Abusing Cops, Drug Induced Perps,, are not deserving of Equal rights provided by our Constitution!!! Why so they can use the violation of Their Rights, to go out and do bodily harm to animals, children, regular citizens like myself , that has to fear them when they get off on some technical glitch only to go out and Maim, mutilate, murder, again, and again. No we do not speak or even think on the same line… I just want to make it clear I meant no Threat, implied or obvious to U!!! That makes me perceive that one that would even venture to come to that conclusion is quite skewed!!! I will have nothing else to say. Thank you

  8. the way the justice system is going is soon judges will hand out sentences of 20 years for shoplifting, 10 years for jaywalking, and death penalty for killing a dog

    • Why the Hell NOT ::: They let Rapists out on probation, drug dealers off without any qualms , dog fighters off for a kickback, dirty cops with no accountability!!! I take it you are not animal friendly well I am & I would love to see the KKK tar and feather some of the animal killers, abusers, maim mongers… It might even detour one of these sickos from visiting YUO someday!!! Ever thought of that then you could complain NO END RIGHT!!!!!
