A police canine with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was fatally injured while chasing a fugitive in Deltona, Florida. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place on the evening of November 22 – the canine, a German shepherd named “Forrest,” was shot at about 7:16 p.m. near Vann Park after the suspect opened fire on deputies who were searching for him in a wooded area.

Forrest was rushed to DeLand Animal Hospital, but he was too severely injured to be saved.

The authorities had been in the area following up on a tip to Crime Stoppers about a wanted fugitive at a residence on Wing Terrace – Forrest was sent out to track the suspect after someone was heard jumping over fences in the area.

The suspect opened fire on Forrest and the two deputies at the scene returned fire. As of Wednesday morning, the search for the man who killed the canine continued.

  1. Rest in peace brave K-9 Forrest, condolences for your handler, family and fellow police officers, I know how much you will be missed. I hope they catch the POS that did this and may he rot in Hell!
