In Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England, a security video of a man beating a dog at a bus stop went viral as animal advocates banded together to find the owner. According to the Manchester Evening News,  the video garnered more than 34,000 views showing a man repeatedly striking a Staffordshire Bull terrier, dubbed Frank by animal lovers on Monday morning.justice-for-frank-2

The man, since identified as the dog’s owner, Jason Smart, as observed walking up to the tan colored dog that had not been leashed. Smart grabbed and hit the dog at least twice in front of onlookers before tethering his pet and walking away. When tracked down by authorities, Smart insisted he had punished the dog “who had nearly been run over” by oncoming traffic for its own good.

Animal lovers from all the  over the world expressed their anger at the incident as it occurred just one day before World Animal Day. World Animal Day is an international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated on October 4;  honoring the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Frank has since been removed from Smart’s home by the RSPCA pending an investigation. Anyone witnessing the situation is asked to contact the RSPCA at 0300 1234 999.

  1. If he had been concerned about the dog’s safety, the dog would have been on a leash to begin with!. I hope he doesn’t get Frank back, and isn’t allowed another pet!
