Misunderstood German shepherd that may cost him his life

He’s handsome and his looks could “wow.” Tragically, the misunderstood German shepherd named Jake may not make it out of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control Downey.  Animal Control officers labeled Jake as aggressive; Jake was uncooperative when he was picked  up from his owner’s home – officers had to use a catch pole.

According to shelter notes on Jake, the staff had been unable to give him vaccinations or an exam, however on November 5, updated notes indicate he was approachable, showed no aggressive behavior and “sniffed as any dog would do.” As to Jake’s background, he has been a backyard dog – most likely missing the proper socialization skills.

Notes from Jake’s previous owner conflict with the shelter’s initial assessment stating Jake was great with people and children. He had only been out on a leash one time. They turned him in due to a neighbor that had a problem with him.

In order to help Jake, he will need to be rescued by an approved organization, and in the plight of this misunderstood German shepherd, a volunteer at the shepherd has offered the following information:

“When I met Jake, he didn’t bark, lunge or even pay attention to me. Jake was very overwhelmed and shut down. He was suspicious and untrusting. He ignored my treats I threw at him. He just stayed laying down.
Relentlessly, I finally got this hunk to give me the time of day. It never was about my hot dogs, he could care less about them. I just kept calling his name, his owners gave him. By the time I left, I got this big sturdy hunk sitting for me, leaning in for scratches, and wincing for me to take him away.”

A Facebook page for Jake can be followed here. Share Jake’s story with friends, family and social media contacts. No dog is “one size fits all” and this boy needs our help. Reference #A5007107. Phone: (562) 940-6898.

  1. WAT a BEAUTIFUL dog TOO BAD HIS OWNERS LET HIM DOWN AND HE MAY NOW DIE BECAUSE OF THAT!!!! CALIFORNIA NEEDS TO WORK BETTER WITH OUT OF STATE RESCUES TO help them placed ALL the dogs the SHELTERS RECEIVE !!! FROM WORTHLESS SCUM BAG OWNERS !!!! That Shouldn’t be Owners to Begin With!!!!

  2. What a beautiful dog. So sad that California shelters do not allow individuals to adopt unless they are residents of California. Hope a rescue organization sees this dog. Wish they all had the same chance as a dog that appears to be pure bred.

  3. Jake is very intelligent, he doesn’t understand what he’s supposed to do. GSDS need emotional, and Physical stimulation daily. Jake is coping with confinement, in a strange place, filled with other dogs begging for their owners, or anybody to give them attention and get them out of there. Jake will overcome if a credible, understanding person takes him into their home, and gives him a routine. Dogs are all creatures of habit. Jake is no exception. Please be sure he has been temp tested with other dogs, male and female.
Rescue needs a FOSTER. To adopt him from out of State, you must convince a CA Rescue they must also have a legit, Rescue near them to do a home check, and form an alliance with the CA Rescue to take Jake, and Fostering him to a commited Foster.
It’s much easier to Adopt using the same procedure. To locate Rescues, look up the Facebook Animal Rescue Directory
you can also keep posting your desire to FOSTER/ADOPT in the comments section of his thread. Advocates will offer assistance.
