It was on Friday morning that a one-year-old Border Collie was spotted running along a rural South Carolina street dripping in her own blood, softly howling in pain and desperately seeking someone to help her. Fortunately a Good Samaritan spotted the suffering dog and brought her to the nearest shelter.
Calling this the “worst embedded collar we have ever seen,” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC stepped forward to help the dog now dubbed Josie.
“Josie is the victim of horrific abuse,” posted Jackie O’Sullivan, the organization’s co-founder, on the rescue’s Facebook. “The rings of the double choke chain were there for such an extended period of time, they had grown inside of her neck.”
Jackie’s heartbreaking description of what their partner veterinarian found about the dog’s suffering brought tears to her eyes.
“The chain had solidified into the neck with Josie’s skin and bone fusing together. It’s a miracle her carotid artery was not severed. It’s a miracle she’s alive,” continued Jackie.
Josie is listed in critical condition, and it is not known if she will survive, however she is receiving the best veterinary care possible. It is tragic to report that this dog’s condition did not happen over night, in a week or even in a month; in addition to her embedded collar – emaciated, weighing only 20 pounds and covered in fleas. Josie’s condition is the near end result of long term abuse and neglect by depraved human beings.
