In Washington D.C. a man dressed in camouflage fatigues has been accused of shooting a deer in the Palisades neighborhood in northwest Washington with a handgun, reports FoxNews.
On Tuesday night, residents from the community reported hearing gunfire, and when authorities arrived they discovered Vernon Goyne, of West Virginia trying to hit a fallen deer with a stick. Goyne had shot at the deer with a handgun; the animal was still alive when police arrived.
It is illegal to hunt in the District of Columbia; Goyne has been charged with five criminal offenses including animal cruelty, possession of an unregistered firearm and having unregistered ammunition.
According to the Washington Humane Society spokesperson, Scott Giacoppo, the 14-point buck weighing about 250 pounds had to be euthanized. According to the Washington Post, Giacoppo stated animals are
“at an even more unfair advantage than they would normally be in an area where hunting is allowed. These animals are more accustomed to human beings around without a threat, so they are more apt to come within a closer proximity.”
