In Bloomfield, New Jersey, rescuers from the Homeless Animal Adoption League HAAL) came upon a situation leaving them surprised but nonetheless proud of a male cat who took it upon himself to protect an abandoned basket of kittens.homeless-animal-adoption-league-2

According to the organization’s Facebook page, a person walking home from work last Thursday spotted a laundry basket full of kittens left on a curb. The Good Samaritan didn’t drive and didn’t know what to do; telling the shelter it seemed someone had recently just dropped them off.  He said the mother cat was with the litter, and he didn’t feel comfortable picking them up. The temperature was dropping, and it had started to rain.

So off the HAAL went to find the kittens. When they arrived, the six kittens were all cuddled together with their “mom” keeping them warm and safe. And that night the litter and their “mom” were soon safely tucked in back at the shelter. Now here comes the delightful twist to this story. Are you ready?homeless-animal-adoption-league

“The next day we had more time and checked out the sweet family,” the HAAL posted on their Facebook page. “When we were examining mom we got a little surprise. You see mom was not a mom at all. She was a he. That sweet cat taking care of those little babies was a male. He could have been the dad or a big brother from another litter, but to those little kittens he was their protector and surrogate mom. He groomed them and gently played with each one.”

And so the protector of the kittens has been named Mrs. Doubtfire, which starred the late Robin Williams who disguised himself as a woman housekeeper to spend time with his children after a bitter divorce. Who knows what happened here, but sometimes dad really know best.

  2. Maybe the cat has a home. I hope someone is looking for him. Cats don’t last long in shelters. Rehoming stats are poor. He deserves to have a life too. Lucky little babes he knew what they needed.

It’s so good to hear about kindness and love … rescuing the innocent without a human voice. Hopefully this sweet little family of kitties in time will find loving forever homes for the Christmas season.
