The hunter in Belmont County, Ohio who shot and killed two dogs appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to two counts of knowingly causing serious physical harm to companion animals. Just two weeks ago, Michael Chedester, 59, shot his neighbor’s two dogs in the woods and kept their collars as trophies while bragging about the despicable deed on social media.belmont-man-to-face-charges-2

According to Wtov9News, Chedester’s attorney entered a not guilty plea after having filed a petition with the Belmont County’s Eastern Division Court stating that under Ohio law he had the right to kill animals on his property if they were disturbing the deer during his hunt. He also deposited a “good faith payment” of $2,000 as to the value of the dogs and as property damage. Pete Byers was at the court and feels Chedester had no remorse for what he had done. The judge did not address Chedester’s petition.

Byers, the owner of the two dogs named Bella and Emmy, was just about to leave for work two weeks ago, when the dogs disappeared. Tragically it was the opening day of gun season, and Byers was terrified that something could have happened to his beloved dogs. After an hours-long search of yelling the dogs’ names and with friends using four-wheelers to  aid in the search, one of the men reported having heard gun shots and a dog yelping.  Byers followed the trail and came up to Chedester and his tree stand.

And there he found five-year-old Emmy, a Weimaraner and six-year-old Bella, a Doberman. Both dogs were dead as their lifeless bodies laid in the brush; their bloodied paws sticking up out of the weeds. Byers called the Belmont County Sheriff’s Department.

Chedester has since been fired from his job at American Electric Power with the company issuing a public statement about the employee’s behavior:

“AEP expects the highest level of conduct from our employees, both on the job and outside of work. We are saddened that unfolded …. and the death of the two dogs. This individual is no longer employed by AEP.”belmont-man-to-face-charges

If found guilty, Chedester faces up to one year in prison and a $5,000 fine for each dog.

  1. He deserves nothing less than the MAXIMUM sentence for each of those dogs, two years in prison and $10,000 in fines as well as the permanent loss of his hunting license and all the guns he owns. Bastard should also have to stand in the middle of the city with a sign on his chest saying he’s a ‘vile bastard dog killer’.

    • I think its reasonable to say that if he is shot and killed, he won’t be able to walk this earth. just saying. Personally I think this turd of a human should spend the next several years of his life working at an animal shelter cleaning up after all the animals….Under strict supervision, of course. And since he doesn’t have a job right now this would be perfect timing.

  2. what he did was so wrong and i hope he pays a years isn’t long enough, at least he lost his job to but Pete Byers isn’t much better he was taken to court already for shooting at another neighbor’s dogs what kind of place they live in

    • I’ll agree he’s a sorry piece of sh!t for shooting the dogs, but what does him being a hunter have to do with it?

  3. Piece of crap should get ten years minimum for each dog. No remorse. nothing and thinks it’s okay to shoot these two beautiful dogs.Make an example of him and let him know it’s not okay !!! If those were my dogs he wouldn’t be breathing anymore.

  4. No reason to kill these 2 sweeties. They are neighbors and that murderer had to know whose dogs were. It was first day of deer hunting….and showed no remorse in court, plus bragging about his killing housepets … I guess Facebook or whatevee

  5. I cannot help but wonder if he let the dogs out, just so that he could have something to kill. I hope that he winds up in jail with a load of animal lovers, and that they give him his just desserts.

    • Are you saying that the dog owner let his dogs out on purpose just so his neighbor would have something to kill?

  6. F*** is wrong with this country ass f****** human beings that were scumbags what the f*** would someone shoot dogs because of disturbing beer four eyed m*********** in the judge approves it not a problem are you f****** kidding me call call come deer on my property shoot my dog’s I’ll f****** rip your f****** head off before I missing piece of s*** have to give you when I’m ready cuz I would have beat the living s*** out of you they would have brought your ass to the f****** house will you low-life piece of garbage I’m sorry for you too beautiful to be killed by this piece of s*** f****** garbage mother f****** rest in peace

  7. He needs prison time, and no amount of money could replace a fur baby Or furry family member. Sorry for your loss, prayers going out to you.

  8. You deserve to die a horrible death you worthless piece of trash. You are the devil and I hope you get your just punishment. You might want to watch your back. You are a number one target now and forever.

  9. Been many times my husband, our sons and friends have had a hunt ruined by a neighbors dog or landowner and you just have to eat that day. It happens. Thats country living. No reason to kill someone’s pet or a family’s family member! He should get the full punishment, financial and jail time! No exception, no excuses!

    • I’m an avid hunter and have hunted with hounds and stalk hunted. While stalk hunting I’ve had stray dogs and even my own dogs pass by me many times but it’s never ruined a hunt.

If dogs are frequently on a piece of property don’t you think deer see and smell them regularly and aren’t concerned has long as the dogs aren’t chasing them?

Even if dogs are chasing them they will be back to their home range within a few hours.

  10. many areas have laws to keep domestic animals from harassing wildlife most were designed in response to negligent pet owners who let animals go hungry and run loose resulting in a return to a feral state I do not believe this idiot should have shot these animals nor should people this stupid be allowed to own a firearm but realisticly the pet owners share in the responsibility of this tragedy yes I am a dog owner as well and mine have never disappeared for hours at a time or even for one minute some people as well should not be allowed to own pets. as a hunter I have encountered dogs in the areas I hunt in but have to this point I have never had the need or desire the take the life of any of them. responsibility people is the key

    • I’m curious about these areas you say have laws against domestic animals harassing wildlife.

Is it a city, county or state law?

How is a dog supposed to know it’s illegal for it to chase a rabbit, deer, squirrel etc?

You claim you’ve never lost site of your dog’s for even a minute. I would guess it’s safe to assume you live in well populated areas and only have house dogs. I live on a couple thousand acres of privately owned land and go days without seeing my dogs regularly.
