Early Tuesday morning, an elderly dog in Columbia, South Carolina stood in the middle of a country road as cars and trucks whizzed past him. No one paused to help as the horribly neglected pooch struggled just to stand; that is until a good Samaritan pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. When the shelter called Rescue Dogs Rock NYC for help, co-founder Jackie O’Sullivan immediately, and without even hearing all of the details, agreed. Louie stray cover 2

“After all these years in rescue, sadly not many things shock us any more. We see awful things every single day. Louie is different. This does shock us still,” Jackie explained to the organization’s Facebook followers. ” What kind of heartless world have we become? It’s sickening! He is not a piece of garbage! Like us, he feels pain! Thank God a Good Samaritan finally stopped, & we are told as she put her arms around him, he just collapsed! He knew, no matter what happened, he was no longer suffering alone. Can you imagine the relief he felt? Someone in a sea of thousands actually cared if he lived or died, suffered or got help.”Louie stray cover 3

Dubbed Louie, the shepherd and collie mix has no known history. Tragically, his physical condition tells the heartbreaking story of a dog no one wanted. Upon arrival at the organization’s partner veterinarian hospital, Louie’s body crawled with thousands of maggots and fleas; such as the staff had ever seen before.Louie stray 2 The maggots had burrowed into every sore, into his bright red burning flesh and had even invaded his scrotum.

In the last few hours, Louie has been cleaned up, given a blood transfusion and continues to receive intravenous fluids for nourishment and pain.Louie stray 3 He has cuddled up into a soft bed knowing he is safe and his eyes are heavy with sleep; and for as far back as he can remember, he no longer has to worry.

It is not known if Louie will survive, but his last Facebook update offers hope.

“We love the vets we work with because they are as passionate about these abused and neglected dogs as we are. We also love our supporters because we know you will root for Louie right along with us! We cannot do this alone, so please help us help Louie by donating towards his extensive medical care. Let’s show Louie there are good and caring people out there who know his life and well being matter.” Louie stray 4

  1. I applaud everyone who actually helped this baby! But I do have a major concern- why am I hearing from Multiple witnesses about the vet and his staff using a razor blade on this senior without anything to help even mildly dull the pain??? To me that seems beyond cruel! Hasn’t this baby suffered enough?? Maybe this rescue who has graciously taken this baby in under their care needs to find a different more Compassionate vet???

    • I have to wonder WHAT you heard and from whom…..was the razor used to remove the maggots? Or….? None of us are vets….do you really think Rescue Dogs Rock, NYC, a wonderful rescue, would use an uncaring, or incompetent vet?

      • Hello — Good to see your Post!! Wyoming RN and Dachshund Lover!!! I will tell Silver ( she inquired of you) too!!!
