This is what happens when someone surrenders their dog

Have you ever stopped to think about the emotional toll that is taken on dogs who are surrendered to shelters? On September 14, Tammy Graves, of the Haley Graves Foundation Inc., captured a poignant photo of a surrendered dog who is obviously overwhelmed, and terrified, after being surrendered to an animal control agency.

Graves wrote, “Today I went to the shelter to take photos for Lab Rescue of three labs needing rescue. Yes three! And as I walked past a kennel I saw this. This is what happens when people bring their dog to a shelter and leave them. This guy yesterday morning woke up happy on a couch or in a warm bed, waiting to be fed, hopped in the car thinking he was going to the park or if it was a bad day he was going to the Vet.”

Graves continued – explaining the dog’s obvious, overwhelming fear at her (it turns out that he is a she) sudden change of life circumstances:

Instead he went to a place where there are 275 dogs barking to be freed, it smells like death, and doors are banging shut all the time. Animals walk by and never return. And he has no idea his fate. All he knows is he didn’t ask to be here. He didn’t even ask to be born to irresponsible owners. But today he lays frozen in fear, in a puddle of his own urine.

Graves summed up the problem – noting that this is not a shelter or system issue, but an irresponsible ownership issue. She wrote:

This is the reality of irresponsible pet ownership and the shelter system. This is not a shelter issue, this is not a rescue issue. This is irresponsible pet ownership. Own it people!!

This dog, now known as “June,” is fortunate. She will not become another statistic because she was lucky enough to be rescued. According to her rescuers, she is not available for adoption at this time. She is heartworm positive and needs help to overcome social anxiety issues.

  1. I never surrendered a pet to a shelter. They were all part of my family; as they should be. I even rescued 3 Cats, and a Duck who just wandered into my yard. My Dogs were all OK with them. I believe I am a rescuer because I grew up with my “nanny dog” BUTCH.

    • I rescue pick up any stray vet it take care of it till the end even when I know I don’t need another whatever but I will never never carry one or any to a shelter or pound. My heart stays heavy for the ones that are carried there. I just wanna rescue all of them. The thing I have the most trouble with is having a dog or cat all there loyal life to and individual and when they get old the individual throws them away like trash. There are fortunate ones that do get that forever home for however long it may be but there are a lot more that get put down or die of a broken heart.

  2. I love dogs so much ,I have two but my husband doesn’t like them so its hard but I love them and protect them with my life . if I could I would take every dog in the world that is not loved ,my heart hurts for them so bad ,I just want to cuddle them up and tell them they are going to be OK and that I love them ,and truefully it breaks my heart to see a poor dog that has no one in this big old world and so scared ,they don’t no what their lives out come is going to be ,I just want to hug it so tight and tell it that its going to be OK ,if I were rich ,this is exactly what I would do
