A fire truck, en route to a fire in the Springfield neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, struck and killed a woman’s small dog. According to News Jax 4, the dog’s owner is upset that her dog, who she refers to as her “service dog” was killed and left in the road on Wednesday.

The fatally injured dog, Pandora, belonged to Susan Mitchell. Mitchell told News Jax 4, “They went off and left her. They did absolutely nothing until I called in. When the fire trucks went down, they came back, they left me to pick my dog up and bring her over here dead.” Mitchell went on to say that there was “no reason” for the fire truck to be “racing down” the road.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crew has expressed a desire to get a new dog for Mitchell, but she is unhappy with that offer, stating that her companion could never be replaced. She is attempting to find out of the fire truck was being driven “illegally.”

No word on why the six-and-a-half-pound dog was in the road. The drive of the ladder truck stated that the dog “ran into the road and didn’t make it.”

The dog’s leash and collar were still in the road when the news crew returned to interview Mitchell – the collar appears to be attached to a retractable leash.

  1. Another victim of the “retractable” leash? Ms Mitchell has to share some of the blame for the fate of her “service” dog. Per the New Jax 4 report the fire truck was on it’s way to a fire hence there was a reason to be racing down the road, they probably weren’t even aware they had hit the small dog. Certainly she should have heard the truck and gotten her dog under control. I feel for her loss, no one wants this to happen to their fur baby, but the fire department is trying to make it right. Just a tragic accident and I don’t feel the Fire Department is responsible for it.

  2. She looks cracked out. They were going to a fire maybe a dog that small couldn’t be seen and attached to a retractable leash? Story doesn’t add up

  3. WHY was her dog in the ROAD? I warn my neighbor about that ALL the time. You have to keep your dog INDOORS if you want him to be SAFE! I mean…the fire truck was driving fast because it was going to a FIRE. Sheessshhhh.

  4. Owners who don’t care properly for the safety and well-being of their precious pets should not be allowed to own any more. This is especially sad because if this was truly a service animal, it should NEVER be away from the owner and out running in the street.

  5. Another victim of those retractable leads. Why was her dog in the road, the fire dept was responding to a fire. I am sorry that her fur baby was killed, but they are trying to !make it right.
