Family searches for dog given away after crash

The family of a man who was killed in a devastating motorcycle crash in Mayport, Florida, is searching for his dog. According to Thursday’s News 4 Jax, “Bubby,” a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, belonged to 24-year-old Kasey Whilden, and his girlfriend, Jennifer Reed, 42 – both died on October 20 when a van struck their motorcycle.

After the fatality, Bubby went to live with Reed’s family – but he did not get to stay for long. According to Whilden’s mother, the family gave the dog away just one day after taking him home. Whilden’s mom, Rita Rodriguez, told News 4 Jax, “They could have left him in my son’s apartment until we got down there. I was down there less than 48 hours after it happened.”

But Reed’s family claims that they did not know how to reach Whilden’s family after the crash, and that the dog was “too disruptive” to their household, which was in mourning. A family member told News 4 Jax, “We just had too much going on here. The dog was barking, running in and out of the house, bringing dirt in the house.”

The family took Bubby to a local animal shelter but someone in the line offered to take the dog home. The animal shelter is trying to help Rodriguez find whoever left with Bubby, but so far, there are no leads.

Anyone with information about the dog’s whereabouts is asked to email Whilden’s mother at [email protected].

  2. OMFG!!!! THEY WERE IN MOURNING????? WHAT THE HELL DO THEY THINK BUBBY WAS DOING???? HE HAD JUST LOST HIS FAMILY AND WAS COMPLETELY TRAUMATIZED!!!! THOSE SELFISH AHOLES COULD HAVE WAITED UNTIL HIS FAMILY ARRIVED, WHICH THEY KNEW WAS IMMINENT, BEFORE SENDING HIM TO A SHELTER! THEN THEY DIDN’T EVEN HAVE THE COMMON SENSE, GOODNESS, NOR KINDNESS TO DO THAT: NO, THEY GAVE HIM TO SOMEONE IN LINE WHO CANNOT BE FOUND!!!!! i DON’T GIVE A RAT’S A** IF THEY WERE IN MOURNING: SO WAS BUBBY, AND THEY COULD HAVE REALIZED THAT THE WORLD DOE NOT REVOLVE AROUND THEM. THEY COULD HAVE CONSIDERED WHAT THEIR CHILD, SISTER, AUNT, ETC., WOULD HAVE WANTED, INSTEAD OF BEING THE SELFISH P****S THEY ARE!!! DAMN THEM!!! WHAT IF HE’S WITH DOG FIGHTERS? ABUSERS? PEOPLE LIKE THIS MAKE ME SICK!!

I never use all caps, but I am so, so angry……

  3. This is heartbreaking, why did Reed’s family take the dog? If they didn’t want it then there must have been some way to get in touch with their daughter’s boyfriends’s family and see if they wanted the dog. The Reed family are irresponsible heartless people, the dog loved their daughter and she wouldn’t have wanted to see Bubby disposed of like this. Bad enough they were taking him to the shelter but to just hand him off to a stranger waiting in line. Bubby most likely was handed over to someone who will use him for a bait dog or someone who could most likely harm him. I pray for Bubby and I pray the Whilden family are able to find him before it’s too late!

  4. Sharing with the hope the person “in line” will see the plea for the dog to be returned to this family that has already lost so much.
