Emaciated pup waits in cardboard box at shelter where he was dumped

At the Panhandle Welfare Society (PAWS), located in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, a severely emaciated pup sat patiently in the cardboard box his family left him in when they abandoned him at the door in the wee hours of the morning.

“We can’t believe he stayed in his little cardboard box, as if he knew he had to wait until someone arrived at PAWS. He was so scared at first, then we gave him some food. Now he is a big mush,” the organization posted early Wednesday afternoon on Facebook.

Now dubbed Claus, the adorable little guy will receive the much needed veterinarian attention his undernourished body and soul requires. His ribs and spine showed through his coat – his emaciated body bloated full with parasites. The collar and flea collar he wore were much too tight – most likely no one had cared for Claus in a long time.

“We are grateful to whoever left him at our door because now he will be fed, loved, and treated by the veterinarian. Something they could obviously not handle themselves. This is what we are here for. He has a name now. He is Claus,” stated the organization.

Although animal advocates are shocked that any owner would abandon their dog, at least Claus wasn’t tossed out into the woods or onto the streets. If only owners suffering hardships and unable to provide for their pets would reach out to their local shelters for help, dogs like Claus could still be in the place he once called home.

  1. It so sad that people gets animals, dogs or cats, whatever they may be, can’t take care of them. So why bother getting these animals if u don’t take care of them. They are family, I couldn’t neglect my pets, they keep me going just like kids. I have a pit and a cat, they been together since they were small. So people if u thinking of getting a pet keep them, don’t drop them off if u can’t feed them or take care of them. Its a sad, sad world with mess up people. God bless.

  3. I agree that dumping him at the shelter was better than in the woods or along the highway or leaving chained in a backyard until he dies BUT why didn’t they wait until the shelter was OPEN??? It’s a cowardly thing to do, dumping in the middle of the night, no matter where it’s being done. What a good boy, to wait patiently in the box. I hope he can find a REAL home soon.

  4. May be dumping the poor little Claus was better than leaving him in the woods but what if he had gotten out of the box? Goodness knows what could have happened to him. There is no excuse for such heartlessness!

  5. I know it’s been a long time since this article was written, but I just went back to this article for old times sake. My wife and I actually adopted Claus, who is now Jackson. He’s such an awesome dog and has brought our family so much happiness. He’s happy, healthy, and loving life. We are so lucky his previous “family” dropped him off, but doing so in the middle of the night was not cool.

    • Thanks SO MUCH for the update, Thomas! And thanks for giving him a LOVING home! Do you have a Facebook page where we can keep up with him? We’d LOVE to see pics of him (and you, of course…lol) some time! ????????❤????????

    • Bless you, Thank you for taking this precious pup in and loving him. He was meant to find his way to you and your family.
