An emaciated dog, weighing just 27 pounds, was recently found in St. Georges, Delaware. The skeletal dog, dubbed “Miracle,” was found after being left on the side on October 3. On Thursday, the Delaware Division of Public Health – DPH issued a request to the public for help in finding out who is responsible for the dog’s pitiful condition, and for her abandonment.

The agency recounted how the emaciated dog was found, “The DAS unit was contacted around 10 p.m. Oct. 3 by a witness who reported a very thin and weak female dog was left in the 200 block of Main Street, St. Georges. A DAS officer arrived a short time later and transported the dog to the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) shelter in New Castle. BVSPCA staff named her Miracle.”

“Miracle was severely emaciated and we weren’t sure she would survive,” said Chief Mark Tobin, DAS supervisor. “Fortunately, DAS was contacted immediately and she is receiving the care needed to help her recover.”

Miracle is being treated by the BVSPCA’s medical team, who has begun an extensive rehabilitation plan, including a special feeding diet and treatment for parasites, to bring the skeletal dog back up to a healthy weight (nearly double her current). She is stable and alert, but still has a long road to travel for recovery.

The OAW asks anyone with information about this case to call the DAS hotline at 302-255-4646. Tips can be reported anonymously.

Donations for Miracle’s veterinary care are being collected here.
