An elderly dog was badly injured when someone broke into her owner’s house in Hamtramck, Michigan, last Friday. According to Monday’s WXYZ News, “Abbey,” a 14-year-old pit bull was apparently doused in Drano and struck with a broom by whoever broke into Sarah Birkel’s house.

Birkel rushed the injured dog to an emergency veterinary hospital for care – according to a GoFundMe account which was created for Abbey, the expenses for Abbey’s care are steadily climbing. The caustic chemical burned Abbey’s eyes and she is also being monitored for internal injuries.

On Monday, Detroit Dog Rescue reached out to its Facebook followers with a plea for help, “We’re begging, anyone with information please come forward. Detroit Dog Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the person who assaulted this dog.”

Anyone who has information about the break in, and animal cruelty, is asked to reach out to the Hamtramck Police Department at 313-876-7800. Find the fundraiser information at this link.

  1. As if it ISN”T Criminal enough to violate the HOMEOWNER”S privacy and constitutional rights. THESE POS perpetrator’s have to inflict PAIN AND SUFFERING on a helpless elderly dog!!! It’s too bad the ASPCA or HUSA doesn’t put up a $5,000 dollar reward and then YOU could be reasonably sure ONE OF their “HOMEBOY”S ” would narc on them for the money !!!! More Drugs and Booze money!!!

  2. Evil, sick monsters. I hope they get caught and get charged with felony animal abuse, in addition to the robbery charges. They should be made to cover every penny of this poor dog’s vet bills AND a hefty fine – plus prison time. At the very least, I hope Karma finds them and does her worst. Prayers for Abbey and her family.

  3. Whoa!! The community has really stepped up for this dog and her family. Over $7500 raised. More than double the estimated cost of her medical needs. I hope her eyes will recover from the horrible damage done. This I will pray for.
