A protective dog is being hailed a hero after not only barking for help in the midst of a devastating house fire, but putting his own body over his unconscious owner’s as flames and smoke filled their Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, home on Sunday. According to the Red Paw Emergency Relief Team, the dog, named “Shay,” caught neighbors’ attention with his barking…when firefighters entered the burning home, the faithful dog was doing his utmost to protect owner Andrea Bulat from the dangerous situation.

The dog’s selfless devotion came at a cost – according to ABC 6 News, Shay was taken to CARES Veterinary to be treated for smoke inhalation. Though stable, it is unknown at this time if the senior dog will survive.

The fire was equally devastating to Bulat, who was taken to an area hospital to be treated for widespread burns – Red Paw Emergency Relief that she is in critical condition.

Red Paw Emergency Relief issued a reminder to everyone of the importance of working smoke alarms:

PLEASE, if you live in City of Philadelphia Government and do not have working smoke alarms in your home, call Philly311. If you live outside of Philly, you can call your local American Red Cross. Smoke alarms save lives!

Asking the good Lord to heal both the human and the companion pet. This is a story that needs a happy ending. Our dogs are most definitely the perfect creation.
