Dennis, a brown and white six-year-old male Bulldog mix was rescued from death row at Hillsborough County Animal Shelter in the Tampa Bay area of Florida by two rescue groups, known as Save the Animals Save the World and Friends of Hillsborough County Animal Shelter. Now fighting cancer, sweet, friendly Dennis was so happy to be given a second chance at life and had been enjoying his new family with foster dad Adam Kehle and four other dogs when he was diagnosed with the serious disease.

Previously, Dennis has suffered from chronic ear infections and has had a draining wound on his neck since leaving the shelter.  Both were treated with multiple antibiotics, but they have never completely healed.  Then to make matters worse, Dennis developed a large lump on his leg which blew up fast.  That is when the vet gave the grim diagnosis of cancer.

Dennis’s foster and the rescue took him to a specialist. The specialist treated the Stage 2 cancer with Prednisone and Benadryl, and thankfully the tumor responded to the treatment. The next step for this resilient and hopeful dog is surgery on both ears to remove his eardrums and permanently rid them of infection. Dennis has likely had this severe infection for years, and since it was never treated properly he is already functionally deaf.

An additional surgery will also be done to remove the tumor from Dennis’s leg. The fact that the tumor has responded so well to the Prednisone and Benadryl gives the vet complete confidence the cancer is curable. For the first time in his life, Dennis will be a healthy dog but this cannot happen without everyone’s help. Although the specialists were kind enough not to charge a consultation fee, and Friends of Hillsborough County Animal Shelter donated $300.00 to his vet bill, there is still the sum of $2600.00 needed for the surgery. Lauren Contino, founder of Save the Animals Save the World put out a plea for Dennis asking all “angels” to

“Please help Dennis get well! He needs surgery to save his life. He is one of the many animals we have saved! Donate for Dennis to save his life…let’s get him healthy before the holidays.”

Despite all the obstacles Dennis has had to endure, he is still a happy, go lucky six-year old boy who loves people and his canine sister Shelly (pictured).
