At the Downey Animal Care Center in California, a young female German shepherd, referred to as “not a happy dog,” has a tragic tale to share. Brought in to the shelter over the weekend as a stray, she apparently escaped from her family’s yard after jumping the fence. Zuzu’s heart fractured into a million pieces on Sunday as her family decided not to reclaim her. A volunteer tells her story:

“With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners, Zuzu lit up like a Christmas tree. She looked like the happiest dog. Yea, she’s going home! But no! Talking to her owners, they told me they were not here to reclaim her; they were getting another dog.”

The volunteer’s mouth dropped open as the dog’s previous owners continued:

“Zuzu’s father, another German shepherd had just passed away and Zuzu was crying and heartbroken. She escaped her family’s yard and hopped the wall and got into her neighbor’s yard. The unhappy neighbor called Animal Control, and her owners were going to let her stay there. Their reason? Because she was crying and sad since her father passed away. She was not a happy dog anymore.”

And so another dog is in desperate need of a new family. This time it is hoped the friendly two-year-old will find a home where she is loved. Share this dog’s plight with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts. She is described as friendly with other dogs and children. A Facebook page for Zuzu can be followed here or here. For more information, contact the Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control Downey Shelter at 562.940.6890. Reference #A5014556.

Check out Zuzu’s short video as her previous owners pet her for a moment and walk away to adopt another dog. Her broken heart is forever captured in the moment they begin to walk away.

    • Maybe if they treated him better, he wouldn’t be “sad”. Dumping him at a shelter certainly isn’t going to make him a “happy” dog. Dumb asses.

    • These morons they don’t get it! They have no heart and affection to care for any one except themselves. They believe animals are objects, and replaceable! So sad!

  1. From ALL the POSTS in the LAST few day’s there HAVE BEEN PARTIES wanting to ADOPT and MAKE a LOVING HOME for this young girl!!!! JUST what is the PROBLEM HERE? Downey SHELTER or THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA that JUST WOULD RATHER DESTROY this PUP!!!

  2. God, are they not humans ? They don’t understand Zuzu? But they said that he is sad, since his father die. They must give him a chance to recover, that his father is gone. Dogs, like other animals have the same feeling like us,humans.being a dog owner they must understand, not just abandoned him, and adopt a new dog ? They can ? Please, save, help, rescue Zuzu to find a forever, loving home, thank you…

  3. You people don’t deserve a pet!!! Shame on you!!! Poor dog does not deserve that. I hope you pay for what you did to that poor angel. Idiots!!!!!!

  4. This is do heartbreaking, I am hoping she finds a good home and I hope to be kept abreast on this sweethearts life. Shame on the sub human maggots that did this.

  5. This is so sad this makes me sick the POS owners should NOT BE ALLOWED TO ADOPT ANOTHER DOG.. WTF is wrong with the shelter? So sad I hope he finds his furever home I wish I could get him….I save them all if

    • I dont think Zuzu would be happy staying with those terrible people. He deserves and is getting a forever home. Ha ha devil.

  6. Praying Zuzu finds a loving, forever home. Dogs are just like us, they greive in their own way. They don’t deserve her anyway, they are heartless for what they did. Maybe they should be disgarded when they are sad….
