A diaper-clad toddler, who wandered away from home, was discovered surrounded by a pack of protective dogs at a park in Victorville, California. According to Thursday’s publication of the Los Angeles Times, the two-year-old boy was wearing only a dirty diaper when a sergeant with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office arrived to Brentwood Park on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department commented on the protective nature of the seven dogs who were with the little boy:

The dogs seemed to be very protective of the toddler when the sergeant approached him to get him out of the rain and cold weather.

The authorities were able to locate the toddler’s mother, who was asleep at a home not far from the park. The woman, identified as 26-year-old Cassandra Violet Bustamante, was taken into custody on suspicion of child cruelty. Conditions at the home resulted in the woman’s other children being taken into protective custody as well – the kids were later returned to the father of the kids.

In the course of the day’s investigation, one of the dogs was overly protective (“aggressive”) and was shot – the dog survived and is recovering. According to the San Bernardino Sun, it is unclear if the dogs lived with the toddler’s family or not.

  1. Shooting the dog was uncalled for. The dog was doing its job, protecting and watching over the child. There were other means they could have used to take possession of the child. Thank God the dog survived and will heal. The officer must be charged and fired for excessive use of a firearm, for shooting an innocent dog, causing harm and suffering to an innocent animal. There was no justification or reason for the dog to be shot. It was quite obvious the 7 dogs were protecting the baby, they should have been honored and praised, fed big juicy steaks, treated as angles. NOT shot unjustly!!!

  2. Isn’t there some other way to control a protective dog? Must they always shoot them? Cassandra Violet Bustamante get the “bad” Mother of the year award. I hope the children are not returned to her if this is the way they are taken care of.
