A five-year-old collie destined to be euthanized on Monday in a county shelter in Alabama had no intentions of giving up on life. Dog saved from euthanasia

In an overcrowded shelter, where no one came to adopt him, the friendly dog’s only crime was having been abandoned by his owner and suffering from a moderate case of demodetic mange.

As he was led quietly into the euthanasia room, the dog sensed something terrible was about to happen, and as he was lifted up and placed on the table to be prepared for the fatal shot of a concentrated solution of pentobarbital into his arm, he would not hold still. He wiggled, he struggled, and he jumped off the table and hid behind the shelf desperate to escape. The drugs and a bag of syringes used to euthanize the dogs can actually be seen in the photo.

The shelter staff was so emotionally moved by the dog’s actions, they reached out to partner rescue organizations asking for help. He was given a one-day reprieve to find a home. When Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were notified, they volunteered. Now dubbed Lucky, this boy has another chance at life.

Lucky’s close brush with death sends a message; let this sweet dog be the voice for all dogs dumped at shelters. Yes, they all want to live. Help Rescue Dogs Rock NYC continue their work. Donations can be made here.

  1. No animal should have to die just because a shelter doesn’t have space or “their time is up”. We need to fight to end puppy mills and backyard breeders, and push for more people to spay and neuter their animals. We also need programs for people who are in need of help with their pets – whether it be for food, vet bills, or behavior problems that are making it difficult for the family to have the pet in their home. Anti-tether laws and animal abuse laws need to be stricter and actually enforced. I’m so glad this one is rescued, but I cry daily over the ones who aren’t. Thank you again, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC. We need about a million more groups like you!

  2. I find it amazing that humans are ignorant enough to believe that these animals have no clue to whats going to happen to them…News flash…They know exactly what’s going on…Thank you to the kind hearts smart enough to see this baby wanted to live and gave him the chance he deserved…Bless you…

  3. OK, so why did it take this to contact a rescue. Why can’t they be in contact with rescues with every animal. You can’t save them all but it shouldn’t take a dog like this one to get a rescue involved.

  4. It takes h eart to allow this sweet collie to live. I commend the euthanasia staff for reaching out to partner rescues in order to give him a chance to live…..I commend RDR NYC for responding rescuing him. Thank you for your compassion. You are amazing & I pray for more blessings to come your way! As for Lucky…you were meant to live…love & be loved from now on! !!

    • It is horrible, but if you think the shelter workers enjoy this, you are 100% wrong. These people love animals. If you think its so easy, try it. They get calls, desperate calls, every day. They dont have the luxury of ample space. Instead of running your mouth, open your wallet & donate to help the rescues do what they do.

      • SO TRUE!!! WHY ignorant people blame and point the finger at shelter workers, is beyond me; we are ALL part of the problem!

  5. You are evil. Shelter / rescue mean a forever better life. STOP killing innocent animals We keep all rescues for however long, sometimes forever at rescue centres in UK

    • Ok, great, but I assume you have a method of taxation or some other way of getting good funding for your shelters, which we do NOT have here. Literally, animal shelters which are REQUIRED by law to take in every dog, cat, etc brought to them, get by on a shoestring….they receive the local taxes AFTER the firefighters, police, teachers, schools, roads, etc get their share…..in a place like the Miami Dade Animal shelter which takes in 34,000 dogs a year, just HOW do you expect ALL of them to find homes?

  6. This is infuriating. There are so many wealthy people in NYC, so many celebrities, why on earth are dogs being put down? Why? I’m not wealthy but I donate $300/mo to save dogs, and I still feel like I don’t do enough. If we see these things on FB, the people who can make a huge difference must too. If I had that kind of money I’d scour the shelters everyday and prevent as many of these NEEDLESS KILLINGS as possible. I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND. It is truly beyond heartbreaking.

    • True, it is heartbreaking…..but NYC though it DOES have a lot of wealthy people, doesn’t mean they all care about animals or donate to shelters or rescues…..THe NYC animal shelter system takes in 34,000 dogs PER YEAR, every year, and MORE, now that more and more landlords are banning all dogs from apartments…….people in NYC have NO CHOICE as they can’t live anywhere but an apartment in NYC.

  7. My husband and I went to adopt a dog on Sunday at the HUmaine Society. WE fell in love with a tiny dog named Harley..only 4 pounds. Because we already have 2 other dogs at home they WOULD NOT SELL HER TO US! We have two small dogs at home one 9 pounds and the other around 10 pounds. The woman told us that this little dog was too small for us to adopt!!!!!!! And we could not have her. Isn’t that the reason of the Humaine Society? For the public to adopt animals? She,the volenteer wouldn’t even let us hold her My husband and I left there with a very bad feeling in our stomachs!!

    • Go to a different shelter that is less rigid…many shelters, like those in Calif especially, would literally rather see dogs and cats die than let them be adopted by people who live out of state or who don’t meet their requirements……

  8. No dogs ever have to die if so called owners have been responsible in the first place. People who abandon their pets are heartless because dogs’ love and loyalty are forever.

      • You check before you rent that is how. If the landlord changes the rules then board the dog until you can find a rescue. Find friends to keep the dog. Or family.
There is usually a solution if you look hard enough.

  9. STOP using the word ‘euthanasia’ for killing healthy dogs. It is not the ‘euthanasia room’, it is the killing room or kill room or some other term.
Euthanasia is what the vet does for your beloved older dog when the dog is suffering and there is no hope of recovery. It was not meant to be used for killing healthy dogs!

  10. 1. They should’ve reached out to rescue regardless of the dog’s behavior, not just because they themselves became emotional.
    2. Another dog was killed in his place.
