Day after day, week after week, month after month, a puppy suffered in agony as she was forgotten at the end of a tether with a collar that grew tighter with each passing moment. The pup, dubbed “Sona,” was recently rescued from her life of misery and she is currently under the wing of Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
Sona’s rescuers believe that it took six months of blatant neglect to cause the type of wound on her neck – the cutting, raw injury created from a collar that literally grew into her tender flesh. The rescue group wrote, “Imagine the pain as maggots begin to multiply inside a wound so deep and infected that Sona needed emergency surgery. Now imagine who is responsible. A human of course. Is it laziness? Is it a total disregard for a living, breathing, loving soul? Is it animal abuse…you bet it is!”
Sona is receiving ongoing treatment for her devastating neck injury – eventually she will heal from this horrific injury. With time, only a scar will remain, though the impact on Sona’s emotional health remains to be seen.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis kindly asks that everyone keep an eye out for dogs who are subjected to life on the end of a chain or tether – when dogs are left to suffer, it is up to strangers to speak up and ensure that the suffering is stopped.
