Take away the crusty eyes, and the itchy, flaky and crusted over skin, and you will find a handsome, albeit senior, German shepherd. The eight-year-old dog, named “Twix,” has been at the Animal Care & Control, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina, for nearly a month.
Twix’s body suggests that he has lived a life of neglect – he is “heavy” heartworm positive, and he has hair loss from a suspected flea infestation. On August 31, notes about a volunteer visit with Twix were posted:
He takes treats really gentle. Came nose to nose with another dog in the hallway and didn’t react aggressively. I believe we have several level 2 dogs in adoption so I’m not sure he could be moved.
Could benefit from a good bath because his skin is very crusty and smell and itchy.
Twix has been non-reactive to other dogs at the animal control facility and he has shown himself to be gentle with visitors. Unfortunately, Twix needs veterinary care to help him recuperate from years of neglect – medical notes show reveal his multiple issues:
eyes have some crusty discharge. ears, nose, lymph within normal limits. heart sounds muffled, suspect murmur grade 1-2/6, breathing is labored. BCS: 3/9 – adequate fat coverage but muscle mass is quite deteriorated and canine is weak and rigid in the rear (likely arthritis and/or genetic predisposition). hair loss over much of rear end, likely caused by fleas. will start antibiotics for skin and anti-inflammatory pain meds. This canine was very sweet and gentle during exam. no chip for now.
Please help Twix get the help that he needs by taking a moment to network his adoption information. With adequate care, Twix will reach his wonderful potential.

He’s been there a MONTH and no one has given him a bath??? WTH? His breathing is labored and he’s stuck in an area that I doubt is air conditioned and it’s been HOT outside. Poor Twix.
If you were not across the country I would take this beautiful dog. How can someone just get rid of a family member. Maybe the dogs should get rid of them and find a loving home to spend the rest of their lives with.
His condition SUGGESTS neglect? No, it SCREAMS NEGLECT! Let’s get busy getting this dog seen and hopefully save his life.
