When a six-month-old Patterdale terrier tested positive for the deadly parvovirus at the Animal Care Center of New York City on Sunday, and the shelter sent out a plea for a rescue to help, not one organization stepped forward. And it’s not because rescues don’t want to help – the tragic fact is on Sunday evenings the only facilities open to administer emergency veterinary services for critical care patients cost at least $1,000 for the first 24-hours.

Still a young life was in jeopardy; if the puppy was not rescued by 6:00, the shelter, unable to hold parvovirus cases overnight, would have had to euthanize the dog. Knowing what would have been the puppy’s tragic fate, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, stepped forward to help. Just two hours ago, the organization’s co-founder Jackie O’Sullivan posted the news to their Facebook followers:

“It’s a Sunday night, so we have no other option than to send Raven to a 24-hour emergency hospital, and we also know it’s $1000 or more for just the first 24 hours!!! It’s critical ER care, and they have to do all their diagnostics. We hope she will do well and that we can move her to our primary vet in a few days, but there is no guarantee of that.  We don’t know what saving Raven will cost, but we do know she did not deserve to die tonight because her ‘owners’ did not vaccinate her! She’s a 6 month old baby!”

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC will not be able to continue taking in the high cost emergency cases without the  donations of their generous supporters. They have been deluged with medical emergencies recently; still their generous hearts and enormous compassion continue to give the seemingly hopeless cases another chance at life.
