People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who left a starving dog in a wire crate in North Austin. According to CBS Austin, the one-year-old puppy now named Sophie, was found last Wednesday abandoned in a wire crate at the intersection of West Crosline and Guadalupe streets. austin-police-department-2

When discovered, veterinarians were not sure if the emaciated, hypothermic and barely breathing female Boxer would live. Fortunately, the spunky and adorable pooch had the strong will to survive. Within a week,  the once starving dog, Sophie gained four pounds and is enjoying the attention, love and affection she is constantly receiving. An update on her condition posted on Wednesday to the Austin Animal Center’s Facebook brought smiles to her supporters:

“And now we bring you a healthy dose of Sophie. This girl is good for the soul! Sophie is getting stronger every day. Here she is with Officer Schwettman, the animal cruelty detective that rescued her and her foster mom Elizabeth…she still needs a lot of time to gain weight and heal so she needs all the loving vibes she can get! It will be a while before she can be adopted but in the mean time, give Sophie some encouraging words so her foster mom can read them to her before bed tonight.”

Donations towards Sophie’s care can be made here.austin-police-department-3

Anyone with information is asked to call the Austin Police Department animal cruelty tip line at 512.978.0523.
