A 19-year-old dog had to be rescued this week after she wandered onto an icy pond in Fairfield, Connecticut, and got trapped. According to UPI News, the elderly shepherd mix, named “Delilah,” found herself in harm’s way on Monday morning.
Firefighters with the Fairfield Fire Department responded to the frigid pond near 130 Robert Lane – Delilah’s owner had tried to reach the senior dog, but the thin ice made it impossible. Responding rescuers commended the dog’s owner for not attempting to be a hero…in fact, when fire fighter Rob Petrie first stopped onto the ice, it immediately broke.
Asst. Chief Gomola explained the importance of calling professionals for help in situations such as this, to WTNH News:
“If the owner had attempted the rescue himself and fallen through the ice, the end result could have been tragic. At the very least, it would have delayed the rescue of the dog because our priority would have been to rescue the owner.
Fortunately, all ended well for Delilah – the fire fighters were able to successfully retrieve her from the ice and she was returned, unharmed, to her owner.
