On Monday evening, the Moscow Police Department released a statement explaining that the killer(s) of four Idaho college students didn’t harm a dog that had been at the house as the attack occurred.

On the night of the incident, officers located a dog at the residence. The dog was unharmed and turned over to Animal Services.

Detectives are also aware of a Moscow Police incident of the report of deceased animals left on a resident’s property. This was determined to be wildlife activity and unrelated to the incident.

The dog was later turned over to a responsible party. According to the New York Times, the dog may have belonged to Kaylee Goncalves, one of the victims. She shared a dog with her ex-boyfriend, but it is still unclear if this is the dog or a pet who belonged to another one of the victims.

The information about the unharmed dog followed rumors that police have found to be false; that the killing of an Australian shepherd in the community had been tied to the violent stabbing deaths of Goncalves, 21, Ehan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21. The owner of the 12-year-old shepherd named Buddy told authorities her dog had been skinned, however police have dismissed the idea the crimes were related. Police have clarified that other dead animals had also been found off-campus, but were not related to the students’ murders.

The murder weapon has not been found, no arrests have been made and although police think the murders were targeted, the motive remains unknown.
