Three dogs, belonging to a woman described as a “dog lover,” were found dead from heat stroke inside of a car parked in Jamestown, Rhode Island. As reported by WPRI News, the dogs had been left inside of the parked vehicle for an “indeterminate” length of time.

The dogs’ owner

Police identified 65-year-old Ann Garnett as the owner of the four-year-old black Labrador retriever, seven-month-old black Labrador retriever, and four-year-old Keeshond. People familiar with Garnett have stated that she would have never intentionally left her dogs inside of a vehicle that was too hot. When police responded to the scene, they found a car that was running, without air-conditioning on, and the windows were rolled up. There was no water inside of the car.

Garnett is facing multiple charges – according to the news agency they include:

Three counts of Unnecessary Cruelty to an Animal, a felony carrying a potential penalty of five years in prison and $1,000 fine for each count; and three counts of Confinement of an animal in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.

It’s hot

Nearly everywhere in the nation is hot this time of year – it is not safe to leave dogs inside of parked vehicles. Cracked windows do not provide adequate cooling and air-conditioning systems can fail. If you see a dog inside of a parked vehicle please reach out to the authorities to report the situation and stay with the car until help arrives. Know your state laws – in many states it is LEGAL to break out the window of a car if a dog inside is in apparent distress.

  1. “She would have never intentionally left her dogs inside of a vehicle that was too hot”. and yet there are 3 dogs dead because she did. I don’t know if her air conditioning failed or she.meant to return and forgot, but her 3 dogs are dead. I will never understand taking them in the car and leaving as long as I live.
