The Pender County Animal Shelter welcomed the addition of an adorable baby donkey over the weekend. “It’s a girl!” On the shelter’s Facebook page, Jewel Horton, manager of the Pender County Animal Shelter made the announcement:
“Mama Donkey was rescued from flood waters on Oct. 12. Last Saturday night or early Sunday morning, she gave birth.”
The adorable mini donkey was named Mattie (after Hurricane Matthew of course), but on Monday evening she gave everyone a scare. When the shelter veterinarian arrived to examine the jenny and did her blood work, the baby was diagnosed with Failure Passive Transfer – a condition where the baby doesn’t get enough antibiotics from her mother’s milk to stabilize her immune system. 
“Fortunately her owners were willing to have the vet run IV plasma on her this evening in hopes to bring that number up to a sustainable level! She was an excellent patient, and her mother was an angel- never interfering but keeping a watchful eye on the situation. She also got some fluids and glucose, as a little pick me up, so fingers crossed when she comes out of sedation she will be a wild little donkey as she should be! EVERYONE loves this little girl,” Jewel posted.
And sure enough – on Tuesday, Mattie has been reported up and nursing.
Besides cats, kittens, dogs and puppies, the shelter rescued seven donkeys, three little horses, one pony, two full-size horses, one yearling horse, seven goats, and nine pigs. Most of the animals are available for adoption. Some of the livestock owners are unable to take their animals home due to contamination of their fields, or they simply do not want to rebuild.
